On a similar note, after getting the urge from playing Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3, I watched the first few episodes of Mobile Suit Gundam 00 the other day. I've generally avoided Gundam shows, what with their annoying, sub-pseudo-philosophizing about "War is bad, m'kay?", but I'm actually coming around to them, despite their serious flaws. (A few months ago, I actually found the original Mobile Suit Gundam series to be refreshing with its nuanced view of war and the people who fight in them.) Anyway...
Gundam 00 might have melodramatic characterizations, silly speachifying, and many other bad anime tropes, but damn if the action isn't dynamic. With the decent bass in my speakers, otherwise overblown giant robot battles are just kind of cool as ****. The opening scene, with less stylized mobile suits systematically annihilating a city, while a religious zealot on a loudspeaker preaches merciless intolerance, is stark and dramatic in a surprisingly mature way.
Of course, after that the show becomes shiny, over-designed robots duking it out in the prescribed fashion, but the choreography or the battle scenes, and production values manage to elevate the show above its cliched excesses. The basic gist is still "War = bad; Peace = good", but at least the ideas are presented in a vaguely interesting and original way. Might have to finish it. Just stay away from the dubs. No matter how melodramatic the Japanese voice actors might be, at least they're better than the American dub actors. It's not always such a big deal, but with a show this melodramatic, there's a fine line between cheesy and just plain awful.
