I think perhaps we are using 'challenging' slightly differently, I like intelligent books, but I don't necessarily equate that with challenging.

I already said we could a bit of everything but there's a certain point when the books are so basic there is just nothing to say about them other than "oh that was nice."

I agree with that of course but we just need a nice balance. I want to take part but if every book is heavy going then us less intelligent folks will get left behind

I like reading things interesting, and philosophy fits under that. I read the Subtle Knife last night even though it's a borderline kids books. I read The Golden Compass I was in 7th grade and I just saw the movie, so I wanted to read the sequel. It's like Harry Potter without magic, but more spiritual and religious based.
