I'm for starting together. I feel like people jumping in when they do will have about 8 conversations going on at once. I think that will be expected of novels we were discussing previously, but while its the topic at hand we ought to explore it till we're done.

Show up, discuss for a couple hours, grab drinks after.

Alright so if we all start together do you we want to have like, a set amount of chapters to read every few days and then discuss for a day? I've never been involved in a book club and the most book discussion I've done is in Lit classes in high school...and that discussion amounts down to the teacher saying "here's what I think. Class over."

Just interested. I've only read two of his novels, both from his American period.

Wut...no. We read it all then talk about it later. You can't possibly achieve a synchronized reading from so many people...plus, what could you possibly have to say about one chapter taken out of context?

Like I said, I have no idea how book discussions are approached. Okay, so let's all read it and then discuss it. When does everyone want to start?

I was just organizing my book collection, and I randomly found that I have The Brothers Karamazov and Crime and Punishment (I got a few hundred books for free due to a local book store going out of business a year ago, and I haven't organized them yet.), but I don't have The Idiot and neither does my local library. I'm hoping my school library has it, but that's not open until Monday.

I share some of the concerns a few have voiced about Dostoevsky being a tough read fro some. The Idiot is more accessible then TBK or C&P but still comes from that same brain. He happens to be my favorite non-American writer of all-time so I love it, but I read Rand and ****ens and Vonnegut so I'm not your typical reader.

If you're posting in the music forums make sure to be thoughtful and expressive, if you're posting in the lounge ask yourself "is this something that adds to the conversation?" It's important to remember that a lot of people use each thread. You're probably not as funny or clever as you think, I know I'm not.

Great idea. I think I've seen a copy of The Idiot lying around my house so hopefully I'll be able to contribute if the time line isn't too tight.

I've noticed that he has a lot of love on this forum and I would love to see us do this with a Vonnegut book, who has the added bonus of being very accessible. Player's Piano or Mothers Milk would be great for discussion, or we could go Slaughterhouse 5 so the largest amount of people could join in.

I also support Dac on The Life of Pi.

Just wait til you get to college. It's the same thing, but it's now an hour and 45 minutes of your professor shoving their opinions on the book down your throat. In two semesters I read about 25 books last year, and I honestly don't think I had a worthwhile in class discussion about a single one of them.

As for a start date, I say we pick a date like two weeks down the road just so everyone can get ready and what not.
