DwnWthVwls 07-24-2018 02:21 PM

That's cheap.. some of the other outta prints I've seen have been like $3-400.. Maybe if they make another XMen movie theyll reprint for the hype.

That Legion character sounds pretty cool.

The Batlord 08-03-2018 04:23 PM

In the Days of Future Past storyline of the X-Men comics Kitty Pryde's designation in the future mutant concentration camp is mutant 187. This was from 1981 so this must be a coincidence but omg yes.

Shadowcat 187 cause **** yes.

The Batlord 08-04-2018 09:00 PM

Is that a xenomorph Grinch? It's been too damn long since I read old school X-Men comics.

Yo, is that art by Byrne?

The Batlord 08-05-2018 09:30 AM

Byrne did the issue but Terry Austin did the cover.

The Batlord 08-05-2018 09:36 AM

And Kitty Pryde had such a weird character design back in the day. Her mouth and eyes look like they're about to pop right out of her face.

Could tell it was a Byrne issue 'cause of the faces in the box in the top left. Btw, after an eon of comic reading, I still don't know what the **** to call that box. I could probably google it, but **** it. I just call it the head box.

I don't know why that box no longer exists. It's nice to know the core cast of a book without having to keep up with CBR articles.

Oriphiel 08-05-2018 04:30 PM

Same, don't know why they axed it. Post-headbox Marvel just ain't the same.

You're right, btw. Kitty Pryde pretty much spent that whole era being surprised at random ****, and just sort of gawking at nothing. I guess they were trying to make her perma-scared and vulnerable so the readers would feel bad for her.

The new Astonishing X-Men seems pretty fascinating btw and would be a prime candidate for a cover headbox: Angel/Archangel, Gambit, Rogue, Mystique, Phantomex, Psylocke, and Bishop. Rogue and Mystique; the whole Uncanny X-Force thing with Archangel, Psylocke, and Phantomex; and Gambit and Rogue together for the first time in years? That's so much sexy soap opera **** that I don't even know how to respond. I mean just putting Mystique into an X-Men team is enough to make me **** myself. And Bishop is there too.

Oriphiel 08-05-2018 04:49 PM

Did you read Rogue and Gambit at all? Came out like a few months ago. Don't know if it's still going, but it had plenty of soap opera goodness and sexual tension.

Btw, I'm biking to a comic book store tomorrow. Know anything I should check out? Gimme all your recs.

The Batlord 08-05-2018 04:55 PM

I haven't been reading anything recently so I don't know. Me checking out Astonishing X-Men and X-Men Red recently is the first I've checked out in months. And that Rogue and Gambit thing doesn't look canon if Astonishing is anything to go by. It looks like the kind of fun throwaway thing for fans that means nothing. Astonishing X-Men is an actual real book though.

It seems that the X-Men line has had a relaunch recently with X-Men Gold, X-Men Blue, Astonishing X-Men, and X-Men Red, and Astonishing sounds like the book to read. It's been pretty alright for the first run though it seems like they're hyping the return of Xavier when it's pretty obvious that it's his evil son. Actual Jean Grey is totally back though, and is the focal point of X-Men Red. I'm just kind of curious of how she'll deal with X-23 who's in the book but other than that I don't know about it though it's got some good reviews.

Oh and btw if you ask the shop dudes what's good then tell me. I've not been paying attention in the least. This last week with looking up current X-Men is literally the only current comics I've checked out in well over a year.

Oriphiel 08-05-2018 05:50 PM

I'll tell you if I find anything interesting.

I read a bit of Red awhile back, but not Gold/Blue/Astonishing. Seemed aight. A guy's head exploded, and that's always fun.

The Batlord 08-05-2018 07:40 PM

Was just chillin' with some old cartoons and it's easy for losers to forget that the 90s X-Men cartoon is great but X-Men Evolution is hands down the best X-Men cartoon ever.

Fight me.

Oriphiel 08-07-2018 02:21 PM

Got Astonishing X-Men 13, Ant Man and Wasp 4, and Bubba Ho-Tep 2.

The issue of Astonishing X-Men was great. Gonna check out more. Noticed Dazzler on the cover, but all she gets in the actual issue is a short flashforward cameo at the very end where she ****ing dies.

Been keeping up with Ant Man and Wasp, and it's been way better than I expected it would be. Trippy quantum weirdness written by a physics dork, great action and colors, and fun dialogue.

Bubba Ho-Tep was meh. Mostly grabbed it 'cause I like the movie. Just kinda boring and standard for a comic book, although Elvis does **** a ghost, so there's that.

Also, I didn't buy it, but I saw an issue of Lockjaw with Spider Ham on the cover. Couldn't bring myself to check it out, but I might anyway.

The Batlord 08-08-2018 10:23 PM

TFW you're reading the new Astonishing X-Men and you see that with the next issue the creative team has changed and the new artist is Greg ****ing Land. I think it's time to check out X-Men Red now.

The Batlord 08-08-2018 10:38 PM

In X-Men Red they have an underwater base called "Searebro". I don't know what to think.

Greg Land's claim to fame is as a tracer who copies from porn among other things. He's also just really boring.

Okay, X-Men Red is officially ****ing good with possibilities of being kinda great. There hasn't been nearly enough progress on the "mutants being accepted into human society" front since Grant Morrison, mostly just one near extinction after another, or just high-action hijinks. Here we have a freshly resurrected Jean Grey wasting no time to try to get mutants recognized by the international community as an official "nation". It doesn't go as planned and prejudice is ramped up, but along with the usual anti-mutant violence that the X-Men have to deal with we see this through a modern lens of hatemongering pundits shouting down non-hatemongering pundits and manipulative social media.

What makes me really like this series more than previous X-Men comics though is the positive attitude it takes to dealing with anti-mutant prejudice. Too often you get the negativity counterbalanced by grim determination and yet another declaration that Professor X's vision isn't being lived up to, but nobody really offers up much in the way of hope, just a stiff upper lip. Jean Grey is perfect for this because she's the heart and soul of the X-Men. Xavier has the dream but gets bogged down with at times downright amoral pragmatism that makes him less than effective as a moon-eyed idealist to make you feel like fighting the good fight; Cyclops is too busy feeling sorry for himself and deciding that he really doesn't have all that much faith in humanity after all; and Wolverine is... Wolverine.

But Jean inspires through both her sheer strength of character and her infectious conviction that the human race can co-exist without hate. When she's not being written as Cyclops' girlfriend or the prize in Cyclops' and Wolverine's love triangle she gives me much the same feeling that Superman or Captain America do in how they're shining examples of what we can be if we let go of our petty nonsense and aspire to be something more. As much as I love Emma Frost the X-Men simply haven't felt the same without Jean and this comic gives me that feeling again and I'm hopeful that the quality will continue and isn't simply reflecting some of the shine from Morrison's New X-Men. There's only six issues out so far so it's the perfect time to jump in.

P.S. Gabby/Honey Badger is delightful.

So when did Mr. Sinister become a lady?

The Batlord 08-10-2018 08:02 AM

I found out about that yesterday. Sigh. Did they have to give her Harley's reject New 52 costume?

I also found out that Mr. Sinister was supposed to be some kid's imaginary personification of evil which is why he's so goofy, and Gambit was the kid's imaginary hero. Then they dropped that halfway through the story and so we were stuck with a character named "Mr. Sinister".

Oriphiel 08-10-2018 08:31 AM

Tbh, I'm actually kinda down with him becoming a chick that wears the stuff that Emma Frost throws away for being not quite revealing enough. It's not like his character can get any dorkier, so they may as well just do whatever the **** with him.

The Batlord 08-10-2018 08:39 AM

Magneto would be Pres. Sinister is the extremist Mags puts on the ticket to appeal to his ultra-conservative base. Nobody would vote for a dot head for President in any case. MODOK for Secretary of Defense.
