Batman - Year One #1 - 4 – GetComics |
Instocktrades.com comes through again. Ordered a bunch of Batman graphic novels I'd been meaning to get for the longest and they came pretty quick, and in a box much bigger than all the comics combined. The extra space was filled with enough styrofoam to protect a baby from a ten story fall, so extra points for treating Batman right. Instocktrades is very much on my good side atm.
Oh, and... Batman: Year One Already talked enough about this recently, but I'm stoked to finally have a physical copy for my very own. http://i.imgur.com/pFXoYa0.jpg The Man Who Laughs A retelling of the first meeting between Batman and the Joker from Batman #1 all the way back in 1940, and one of the best Joker stories you'll ever read. If you want to see the Joker at his most twisted and un-PG-13 then get this now. http://pm1.narvii.com/6116/347d285e1...6e0c09c_hq.jpg Dark Victory Sequel to The Long Halloween, which is one of the best Batman comics ever. Very noirish, with amazing artwork, and makes you give a **** about Robin's origin. https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon...._QL80_TTD_.jpg Hush Only read a bit of this, but it's very highly regarded and I'm looking forward to finally finishing it. Also written by the same guy who did The Long Halloween and Dark Victory. https://dynamic.indigoimages.ca/book...ty=100&lang=en Batman: Year 100 Don't know much about this one, other than that it's about a new Batman a hundred years after the events of the actual Batman comics, but I kept seeing it pop up on best of lists so I figured I might as well. And no, it's not in any way connected to Batman Beyond. http://www.forbiddenplanet.co.uk/ima...0_/GY5554a.jpg |
You know there's a theory that at the end of The Killing Joke that Batman kills the Joker? It's a weird looking scene that can be interpreted in different ways if you want to look at it a certain way. The Killing Joke actually was not necessarily even considered to be DC canon at first, so there was nothing to stop it from doing anything like that. But now that it is canon obviously Batman could not have killed the Joker, even though there's the possibility that this was in fact the original intention, even if it was left vague and up to the viewer to decipher. This IS Alan Moore we're talking about.
So I think I've become a believer of this theory. I might do a comic journal entry about why. |
Omg. I found a comic titled Harriet Tubman Demon Slayer. I am about to dig into this hardcore. Too bad only one issue is out so far.
|
That reminds me that I still need to read The New Adventures of Hitler.

Think I'm gonna get back into Batman Beyond soon. I watched a bit of it a while ago but never kept up with it. The first two-episode origin story is great, but the next episode with Inque (my new avatar) resold me. A lot of Batman Beyond villains aren't top shelf Rogue Gallery material, and Inque is definitely not the best character, but Batman Beyond villains are generally visually fantastic. And holy **** is Inque a perfect example. She's just all about movement and imagination and intensity, and in her first episode basically makes Terry look like a complete and utter chump, even though he eventually wins by luck.

So I've been wondering.. do you know of Thorgal ? I wonder just how popular these comics are worldwide, they were a hit when I was young, I grew up on the adventures of the guy, most of folks from my country and generation are very familiar. There's supposedly a tv series in the works which would be awesome.
Thorgal is a child that came down from the sky, in a capsule of sorts. This is observed by the crew of a Viking longship who take it as an omen from the gods. They find the capsule with an infant inside and raise him as a viking - here's where the story starts. I won't sum it up, but it's a great mix of many mythologies - Nordic and European at first, but as the story progresses, our hero and his family and friends visit places like south America or the inside of the earth or other bizarre places. Here's a good review, read it. Generally it's a really well written story that doesn't use cliches as much as you'd think it would. The plots of subsequent comic books explores a wide variety of themes, sometimes you laugh, often you cry.. sometimes you're terrified. I can't recommend this series enough. I also know where to find it online, though I don't think I can post a link publicly, so if you're intrigued, let me know. Edit: here's an even better review. Quote:

Never heard of it and I think it's fair to say that Thorgal never made over the pond. I'll look it up.

Because if it's half as good as I remember it to be, this could be another Witcher - something with a small but devoted fan base that got really popular when exposed to the rest of the world. Because the quality is there, it just lacked marketing and recognition. |

And mind giving me that Thorgal online link? I'm having more trouble than usual finding it. |

O.M.G. A new year and a new plethora of DC animated movies that are generally better than their live action counterparts, and I'm pretty ****ing stoked that there's gonna be a Batman and Harley Quinn movie in August that looks like an extended version of "Harlequinade" from Batman: The Animated Series (my spellcheck just informed me of the correct spelling of an episode of B:TAS, so life is good atm). Also sounds like they've got the original cast again, with the sad exclusion of Arleen Sorkin as Harley, but she's been retired from the role since the end of the DCAU as far as I know. One of the only things I ever wanted from that show was more Batman x Harley odd couple hijinks, so this is kind of a dream come true.

Omg, Batlord, apparently there's a GWAR comic. I flipped through issue 2, and saw a panel where they shove a nazi flag up hitler's asshole.

So I just found out that the new Hulk in comics is an Asian teenager.
What!? |

Oops, I was wrong, GWAR aren't the ones who shove a nazi flag up hitler's asshole. Hitler's wife is the one who does it, after eating bath salts.
Btw, I think every member of GWAR past and present is eventually going to be in it, since they're traveling through time in a time-machine shaped like a cock. |

I'm mostly into older European comics (Loisel, Bilal, Manara, Serpieri, etc. etc. etc.), although I do own some American and British graphic novels (Black Hole, Heart of Empire, Maus, In the Shadow of No Towers, Life With Mr Dangerous, Alice in Sunderland - for example).
A couple days ago, I finally managed to find a copy of this Francois Schuiten book on Amazon. I've been searching for it for literally several years with no luck. It would be completely unavailable in english, crazy expensive in danish and somewhat available in french. I can't read french, so I was just completely out of luck for the longest time. Now I finally found the damn thing on amazon. Must have had a reprint. https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...-the-grain.jpg Like anything by the same artist, this comic has an interesting mixed historical setting with a vague hint of sci-fi and mysticism. I adore his very precise, thin-lined drawings. This book has a very interesting and odd storyline, that among other things involve an apartment that generates bucket loads of sand every day for no reason. I read it years ago at a library and I can't wait to read it again. Not sure if anyone else in here have any interest in European comics from the 70's, 80's and 90's? |

Currently rereading/catching up on the new Suicide Squad series, and I must say that it was a good ****ing idea to get Jim Lee to draw it. If there's one thing that man is good at it's making things look god damn awesome.
