i'll give you best in 15 years but i don't think they've topped 'all in the family' yet hehe

while they did have some solid satire in their early seasons they also had just as many fart joke episodes from what i remember.

Veronica Lodge 11-27-2008 07:34 AM

the sh*t episode was on yesterday. amazing.

Problem I have with Family guy is it's lazy much less intelligent humor.

People say things like "remember the one where stewie went to the fridge for some sunny dor when peter was the blue guy from tron" etc etc etc.

The plot is irrelevant and that's lazy, doen't mean it's not funny, it's jut not high quality.

Come on, the lice episode? The one where Towelie was on Oprah? South Park has had more than a few misses.

South Park is the smartest show in the history of TV by a long shot.
That says more about TV than it does the show. That is if a show that features a talking piece of sh*t as a recurring character is actually the smartest show on television.

Both great episodes. The Lice one really took a shot at over the top epic cinema like Michael Bay likes to make. And the Towlie one aside from being hilarious featured a talking minge and a-hole.

And that's piece of shit that teaches life lesson's and it's not a recurring character hardly. 3 Episodes in 11 years.

OMG oprah epi was AWESOME.

wow, im shocked that you didnt like it.

Seltzer 11-28-2008 07:51 PM

The thing I like about South Park is that they maintain the overall mood of it if you know what I mean. Sure the jokes are funny, but sometimes you just have to laugh at the ridiculous scenarios/parodies in general.

It's mood which makes the UK Office, I'm Alan Partridge and Peep Show great shows... it's not just the jokes you laugh at, but the palpable awkwardness of the scenes.

That type of of self effacing humility in the face of such blindingly brilliant commentary is unheard of...So sayeth the Spider.

See? I can be like South Park too.

[Paranoid.Android] 04-24-2009 08:31 PM

South Park, definitely.

I liked Family Guy when it was first on the air, but it's become a parody of itself. The gimmick's gotten old, and the new season is pretty much unwatchable. South Park, on the other hand, started out as a silly, vulgar show with little point to it whatsoever and has evolved into an incredibly well thought out piece of comedic brilliance. Yeah there's a few lemons thrown in the mix but for the most part it usually delivers both laughs and social commentary with equal prowess - without getting rid of the d*ck and fart jokes that got it watched in the first place.

Antonio 04-24-2009 08:43 PM

they both have ther good and sucky moments

Roemilca 04-24-2009 09:03 PM

South Park isn't ever funny. Family Guy used to be funny.
Family Guy wins.

Kamikazi Kat 04-24-2009 09:19 PM

I would definately prefer South Park to Family Guy. I agree with JayJayJah, but to a much lesser degree. I have seen quite a few episodes in both series that just didn't make me laugh, they both have their moments. The show does a great job of providing humor based on the absurd, current event issues, and a variety of other things. I did like Family Guy when it was first on, but it slowly got worse and worse due to the show not really changing much, not giving the show new appeal, just the same comedic style, same type of jokes, ect. Also, the show being overplayed to an extreme amount on channels such as Adult Swim doesn't help.

Scarlett O'Hara 04-25-2009 12:53 AM

South Park. Although my flatmate would completely disagree with me...she's addicted to Family Guy!

South Park by a mile.

Seltzer 04-25-2009 09:55 AM

Well, as I've said before, I definitely prefer South Park.

But this season has been pretty disappointing so far. The Jonas Brothers ep was good. Despite predictably pandering to the economic situation with Margaritaville, it was great. The Fishsticks ep was somewhat promising but they really hackneyed the joke. Aside from that... banal...

boo boo 04-25-2009 10:04 AM

I haven't seen any of the new eps so I can't say weither or not I agree.

Surell 04-25-2009 11:22 AM

I can't put my finger on what the hell the alien episode was about. I thought it was about Wall Street but not really.

Well my mate tells me there were Star Trek references which I missed since I've not seen it before.

Surell 04-25-2009 11:25 AM

The Star Trek movie's not even out yet though and I don't watch that other bullshit.

someonecompletelyrandom 04-25-2009 01:03 PM

You know.. I was about to post on here and say

"Why do we even need to debate this? Can't we just love both the same?"

And then I saw that I was the one that started this thread. Talk about...

idk why either, but i'd have to guess possibly it's one of those "WTF were these guys thinking?!" shows that caught peoples attention

i still love it though

khfreek 04-25-2009 02:04 PM

I can only assume people who think South Park isn't funny either haven't watched it since the 2nd or 3rd season, or don't understand satire at all.

EDIT: I love how I tend to make a negative verb a positive one, especially when it changes the whole point...

EDIT II: I love how I thought I had made a mistake and instead made it a double negative...

Raust 04-25-2009 09:03 PM

Well family guy sucks so south park wins by default.

i think South Park might have one good episode per season, i could do without the rest of them. and Family Guy is terrible anymore, the jokes are forced and they completely misappropriate all the punchlines to Stewie (who might be my most hated character ever).

also ATHF is terrible too.

Are you just trying to piss people off? ;)

lucifer_sam 04-26-2009 06:45 PM

no, Aqua Teen is annoying as hell.

someonecompletelyrandom 04-26-2009 07:04 PM

Well I will admit that going into I thought the show was retarded. But the more I watched the more I began to understand the humor.. much the way with Tom Goes to the Mayor or the Tim and Eric show.

Piss Me Off 04-27-2009 06:01 AM

I still love South Park, the Obama episode is a more recent favourite of mine.

khfreek 04-27-2009 06:15 AM

The other day, I was watching Dexter's Laboratory, a classic cartoon from the '90s. It's about a small boy with a foreign accent who has the intelligence and ego of a genius... and during the credits, who should I f'ing see as a writer but Seth McFarlane. Ripoff artist.

coryallen2 04-27-2009 06:18 AM

Family guy has a better "comedy" aspect to it. South Park on the other hand is not really funny anymore. It reminds me of something you put on youtube just for views. It's more appealing to the younger people. And they swear too much. But family guy is very politicaly wrong. Thats why its funny. They actually put time into animating it. Not to mention everyones voice is not the same.

  • FG is more conventional a comedy as it follows gags, stereotypes, and parodies. It does not beat the satire of SP by a long shot.
  • That's funny, because sentences 2-4 sound like a very accurate description of FG. SP has only gotten smarter with age.
  • SP is the most politically wrong show on television. It's been banned in several countries for how raucnhy it was, and what has FG done? It got canceled because it didn't have enough viewers. That's it.
  • SP is about getting a message across. It's message does not call for good animation.
  • I can think of two people with the same voice on SP, and that's Stan and Kyle. FG's plethora of different voices only adds to the possibilities of the viewer hating one.
