I've been sober a long long time, I haven't bought beer in well over 18 years, but before that I bought and drank ENTIRELY too much beer, and at least back then Heineken cost as much or more than good beer (meaning microbrew porters, hefeweizens, ales, etc. locally by brands such as Widmer, Sierra Nevada, Pyramid, et al).

The only thing I routinely drank that would be defined as cheap beer was Henry's Ale. I drank a LOT of that in the early-mid '90's just before I got sober.

Nothing and I mean NOTHING is worse than Bud and Coors, ESPECIALLY Bud or Coors *Light*. Effing swill IMO.

But again I'd drink cyanide before I drank alcohol now. I don't mind hanging with other people drinking at all, unless they get sloppy and/or drink alcoholically.

Oh I agree, Heineken is miles beyond Budweiser or Coors. I don't buy my beer (<21), so I just assumed that Heineken was cheap as dirt given its ****tiness. I'll drink anything but I admit that I've been spoiled by all of the local microbreweries, and that number is many.

SF, Portland, Seattle and surprisingly Bend OR are the capital of high quality microbrew beers. I've been to Germany and the beer from those west coast cities is every bit as good as the German beer. The main difference between the west coast microbrews and Euro beer is the temperature it's served. Yes, they serve it warm over there.

San Diego has a lot of locavores, so they're quite popular here too. I've had a few of the heat (idk if heat is the right word but whatever) activated beers and I was actually surprised that they're quite good.

Well, I'll never find out about the SD microbrew scene, but it's good to hear that it's alive and well.

What's keeping you from San Diego?

It's not that. I'm a retired alcoholic, I don't drink.

Ah, I see, I thought you were on probation or something. Good on you for (realizing and) kicking your addiction .
