I generally don't but games for more than $10 unless I just gotta have something, but today I decided to take a chance on Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, which is on sale for $20 (anything Japan generally at least piques my interest). Best impulse buy I've made in I don't know how long. If you've played Commandos (which I haven't but I've seen it played) it's the spiritual successor: an isometric RTS that's about stealth and single units/characters who each have unique abilities who you have to utilize in different ways to achieve your objective. No base building or death ball armies, just a few badasses being ninjas. Already played 8 hours in one day, so it's safe to say that I'm sprung. Laying traps and then making bird calls to lure in unsuspecting peons has not gotten old yet. Nor has using bird calls to lure in unsuspecting peons into shuriken range. Have I mentioned that you can lure in unsuspecting peons by leaving sake on the ground? There's all sorts of ways to sneak around or dispatch your foes, but honestly I say **** sneaking around people; I just want to hunt every peon down like a dog until the entire map is clean of their filth. This can take a while tbh. I just finished mission three and it took me three hours. Partly because you have to have patience to wait for the right moment to strike, not to mention the sheer number of enemies on any given map, but mostly you just have to reload a lot. This game is not easy and it does not hold your hand. You get seen once and while your character in danger might survive, there are now a bunch of reinforcements to make your life more difficult, and if you're going up against more than one enemy then your character's probably just dead. There are so many tiny ways to **** up and lose the element of surprise that just nailing a thing you've been trying to do for five or ten minutes over and over again can make you feel like the hardest of asses. This game rules. The only thing that actually bugs me atm is the loading time whenever you start a mission. In-game the loading times aren't a problem, but that very first load of a level is a bear. My two-year-old, non-gaming notebook takes probably five minutes to load that **** and I'm liable to just go smoke a cigarette while I wait. That's not good. But at least the missions are long enough that it's a particularly recurring problem. But yeah besides that Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun is the ****. And that crazy little girl Yuki is probably about to be one of my new favorite video game characters.

Yooka Laylee Picked this up during the winter Steam sale and boy was I wrong in thinking that the people that hated this game were actually right. Obviously this is not a perfect spiritual successor to the Banjo Kazooie era of collectathon / 3D playformers, but man it's still quite good. I've been having a blast playing it and I'm still only on the first world. And that's because not only do the worlds start off pretty large, they get even larger as you progress through the game. The collectathon aspect is not crazy either. You always get something in return for going somewhere in the world. It's definitely not as dense or immaculate as a lot of other games out there right now, but if you're just looking for a casual throwback to Banjo Kazooie era video games, Yooka Laylee certainly does that. I'm mostly upset with myself for letting the negative side of things deter from playing this game. Yeah the game has faults and yeah it may be a bit on the easy side, but I'm really only looking for a fun game to play when I don't have much else to play and this certainly piques my interest in that way. It's nowhere near perfect but it's not the worst game out there. |
