It got to the point that I looked up on the internet how to scan faster and what worlds had what resources. And it's still like pulling teeth. Who even signed off on that idea? Who thought it was anything approaching engaging gameplay?

I'm guessing they were trying to have their cake and eat it too. They probably wanted to both have a way for the player to feel like there's a big universe out there with myriads of planets to visit, but they didn't want to really put significant resources behind it.

It's definitely one of the most ill advised game mechanics I can think of in an otherwise well made game. Most really terrible game mechanics sit inside terrible games.

It's extra bad cause I'm one of those people who have to do absolutely everything as soon as I can do it. So I just couldn't let an upgrade sit idle no matter how long it took to harvest resources or what else I'd rather be doing. Eventually it feels just like work.

Fortunately, I only fall into that OCD hole very rarely. But when I do, hours drain away until I'm totally zombified. It's become a sort of test of gameplay quality for me: If it triggers my compulsions but has no substance, it is a very bad game. I avoid that kind of gameplay like the plague these days. There's nothing worse, really.

Good reasoning!

My logic:

10 reasons why playing video games is good for you:

1. Playing video games will improve reading skills.
2. Playing video games teaches you to be observant.
3. Playing video games encourages you to be creative.
4. Playing video games improves your reaction time.
5. Playing video games improves your social skills.
6. You learn music while playing video games.
7. Playing a video game is kinda like watching a movie... You learn how to analyze and judge movies.
8. Playing video games will improve your communication skills.
9. Playing video games will improve your scientific analytical skills.
10. Playing video games will teach you religion and morality (well, at least to some extent)

I agree so much it hurts. All the no-talent hacks end up writing for games, apparently.
