Indiana Jones covers similar territory as well.

The LucasArts games. Looking back, it's hard to even see how Sierra was seriously considered a competitor to LucasArts. One had the quantity and the other had the quality, and while not all Sierra games were Space Quest III or Leisure Suit Larry III level of bad, they just didn't have the same kind of spark and quality that LucasArts was doing since Maniac Mansion. If you do want some recommendations for adventure games of the era I'd say:

Under a Killing Moon, Pandora Directive and Tex Murphy: Overseer (GOG)
Toonstruck (GOG)
Beneath a Steel Sky (free from GOG)
Snatcher (kind of obscure and hard to find)
Sanitarium (GOG)
Blade Runner (hard to find)

I'm hesitant to put The Longest Journey on here because it has some of the weirdest puzzle designs, but it has a really intriguing story. It's kind of worth playing with a strategy guide but your mileage may vary.

Unpopular video game opinion:

Fallout: New Vegas > Fallout 3

The Mojave is a more immersive setting than the DC wasteland, even if there's nothing quite as awesome as the actual ruins of the city of DC; the diversity of guns is superior; the companions are better characters, and their quests make you care more about them (although I do miss the evil mercenary guy who charges into fights with those sadistic battle cries); the much higher amount of side quests gives the game a lot more replay value, the lack of which in 3 basically made it a game you could only really play once before losing interest; the factions are awesome; and your ability to really affect the world around you makes your choices feel far more relevant.

It also helps that I have the New Vegas edition with all the DLC, as I don't have XBox Live and only ever played the base Fallout 3 game. But it still sounds like the DLC for for New Vegas is better anyway.

Also, two words: anti-materiel rifle. How I ever fought deathclaws without one is beyond me.

Really? I was always under the impression that New Vegas was more widely like by the general public, at least when I visit game forums. Bethesda are wonderful at building giant (if shallow) sandboxes full of activities for me to do, but Obsidian is great at writing and filling in those sandboxes with character and charm.

Sure the factions are better in NV but to use the excuse that the Mojave looks better than the east is weak, as after all it's just mostly barren wasteland anyway and all kind of looks the same.

NV is really let down by the casino strip and the intrigue in the hotels, which is used to bulk out the story, overall 3 is better than NV imo.

I've just finished Fallout 1 which is a great game and about to start Fallout 2 and both of these take place in the west.

Fallout 3 looks way better than New vegas, not only is the world better but the overall lightening of the game is also way better, New vegas lightening looks awful but the game does have better writing and more diverse outcomes especially when you add the Dlc's

Overall i'd say New vegas is better but Fallout 3 has a more immersive world.

i appreciate the suggestions.

I've always heard more people bitching about NV, largely because of glitches. And I had no idea New Vegas was done by another company. As far as I know Bethesda owns the rights to Fallout, so why did another company do NV?

They're both barren wastelands, but the desert setting really makes the wild west vibe come to life. And the greater amount of settlements makes the world feel more alive.

It's been a while since I played 3, so I can't say about the graphics, but I've never been bothered by them in NV. And even if you prefer the actual setting in 3, everything else about the game is inferior.

The reason you don't like Fallout 3 that much, is that it's in your neck of the woods and it probably looks like where you live. :wave:

I've probably been to DC all of twice in my life.

Presumably because Bethesda was hard at work on Skyrim and The Elder Scrolls Online. Considering Obsidian Entertainment consists largely of ex-Black Isle Studio employees who made Fallout 2 and Planescape: Torment, two games widely considered to be the best in their genre, that's a bit of a weird complaint. The glitches thing too seeing as how Bethesda is legendarily known for their glitches.
