I'm only about an hour into it and it's my first Tales of game. Does it end up opening up more later on. Right now it just feels like the same corridor style that FFXIII had in the beginning. Oh yes the map thing bugged me as well. I wanted to remembered where I was heading and kept trying to pull up a map but couldn't. I have the second one also but I want to finish this one up. I like some of the dialogue. It gives me chuckles every now and then.
I didn't care for the story much but the gameplay was fine imo. My favorite power had to be Video when that came along.

What I mean by a world map, is being able to go outside of a town or dungeon, and traverse the terrain of the world itself; reference a game like Final Fantasy 7 where you traveled the various continents by foot, boat, or an airship...
I didn't like how for the entire duration of the game, it was just going from one part of the map, to the next connecting area. It is more or less like one massive dungeon map that you traverse. And it is extremely linear, there's limited exploration, you follow one direct path, what little other parts you could branch off and explore did little to make up for the lack of exploration or options you had to look around. I played pretty much the entire game to see if things changed. They don't. Tales of games aren't meant to be these boxed in experiences. They're meant to be open, widely able to explore. Tales of Xillia just did not satisfy me. It disappointed me.
But to answer your question. No. It doesn't really open up at all. You should get used to traversing the same paths you already have, for the entire game. You're free to go back and look around in the areas you already have been to. But that is pretty much it. I saw that you have the second Tales of Xillia, I haven't played that one. I'm talking about the first Tales of Xillia. I didn't bother with the sequel.
I recommend checking out older Tales of titles like Tales of Graces, Tales of Vesperia, Tales of Symphonia, Tales of Legendia, Tales of Phantasia, Tales of Eternia, and the original Tales Of Destiny, and Tales of Destiny 2. All of those games are great.
