I've been re-playing Wind Waker. It's great and all but the lack of precision on the analog stick has really been getting on my nerves. Primarily when I accidentally jump off a platform.

I think real replay value is something like New Super Mario Bros. Wii where you have to collect the coins to unlock more stages to play in. Or maybe something like Resident Evil where if you can get under a certain time/beat it on a certain difficulty, you get a weapon. You guys agree or disagree?
It really depends on the context. For me, in games like Fallout: New Vegas (which I play through Steam on PC), the achievements aren't the goal at all, but serve more as markers, and, in some cases, a nice way to take a break from questing and just run around the wasteland for achievements until you're ready to get your head back in the game. The game has enough replay value in itself without needing the help of achievements on Steam.
But say, for Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Achievements are medals and stats, which serve more as bragging rights and a basic sense of achievement simply from getting your soldier ranked up with great stats that reflect your skill in the game.

I think, regardless of intent, somebody, somewhere, is going to get something out of achievements. And in cases where achievements serve as the only replay value in a game, that's more a reflection of the nature of the game itself, rather than the attempt to make it replayable.

Finally acquired this piece through a friend of mine. Been looking for it out here for months now. Apparently, Muslims don't think too highly of religious-conspiracy based video games. Who would have thought.

Pretty badass game. Long as hell, but it hasn't gotten boring yet.

Yeah, with a game like Fallout 3 (which I have played for probably a total of over 250 hours, no joke) you don't even need/want achievements to play it. If a game is fun and good enough, I WILL replay it, it's inevitable. If it sucks but has a bunch of time consuming achievements, I won't replay it, but it's sad that some will suffer through a crappy game to have that "platinum trophy" or "1000 G" that is meaningless and the only person it matters to is you.

Many achievements, like ones for online FPS's, are annoying and I don't understand why anyone would actively pursue them or "boost" for them. What is the point?

So what do you guys think when it comes to old games (8 bit, 16 bit, n64/ps1) vs newer games? (ps2, ps3, wii, xbox360)

i always thought of because of their "restrictions", 8 bit games were always a step up in their innovation - i remember playing a game from the viewpoint of a worm on the Spectrum

even the old 8-bit arcade games were more innovative than newer games, like Bubbles, where you're a bubble scrubbing dirt off the sink

now all games seem to just follow the rote and routine of each respective genre with not much innovation, the only game I thought which broke the mold was Portal

see that part? it only matters to them/you.

I don't get why it bothers you so much. it only matters to the person that wants to jump through all of the hoops to get that trophy.

I think I know why it bothers you though, because you have friends that go around bragging about getting certain trophies or something.

I feel like I have this debate/argument so much. It's always retro gamers vs. graphics fans.

There were crap games on older systems just like how there are crap games on newer systems and vice versa.

I don't own a pay of rose colored shades were all older games are far superior to new ones.

@ djchameleon: Haha, nah it doesn't bother me THAT much. Just getting some ranting off my chest. You're right, I used to play Xbox360 with friends, (but I don't have the time anymore) and they didn't BRAG per se, but they would become total ass holes as soon as an achievement needed to be gotten. Here's a typical conversation:

Me: "Hey guys, wanna play some Team Fortress 2?"

Them: "Nah, we got all the achievements on that already, we're gonna play (insert latest movie based game with easy achievements) instead."

Me: "Oh, okay."

Ass holes.
