I'm playing on Brutal difficulty and haven't really died much in the later portion of the game.

Well theres a few reasons why.
1. The starting zones are going to be flooded with newb trash hogging mods and resources who'll level them to 15-20 and thats it. 2. Bugs will be worked out. Right now theres going to be a lot of change going on. Wait till its far more stable. 3. At the beginning of Wrath, I decided to change from my then main (lock) to another toon, none of which were close to level cap. Because of that, I got to 80 when my guild was hitting Ulduar. Suffice it to say, no one was interested in Naxx. 4. When BC came out I would be in groups where I was the only non-BE. In Wrath I was usually grouped with two or 3 DK's. New is always disgustingly fashionable. Give it a month before you start, don't make them your main until your capped, or pay for a race change. Theres just no real reason, especially early, to go playing a race that offers little more than optics to the same old class. Whats your faction and main?

I haven't run into any discernable bugs not related to my mods. meh, it's kinda just how it goes. you should just pick whichever race you want.

I'm thinking of going just a standard sort of weapons based class the first time around. Maybe a human paladin... is there anything you'd recommend? |

That depends on what you like doing in these sorts of games. The life of a DPSer is occasionally boring (waiting for queue times) but you're not going to be responsible for other people if you do.
As a paladin you're likely wanting to play Retribution, but other folks are almost always going to want you to heal. As a new player, you don't want your main to be forced to heal. Tanks are highly responsible too which paladins can also do. As I said, a Pure DPS class can wait in longer queues but you won't be forced to do anything but attack. The 4 pures are: Hunters, Rogues, Warlocks, Mage's. If you're looking for a straight up weapons class, try rogue.

When you get feats, go beast master as this spec is best for soloing. Then, when you hit level 30, get a dual spec into marksmanship or survival to do more damage in groups. I'd suggest survival!
