I got to be a total nerd last night. Went with 2 friends to the midnight release of Reach, got it, played through the campaign on the hardest difficulty, and went to bed at 8am.

am now a zombie

don't take this the wrong way but i've never understood this sentiment. how is it satisfying to go through the entirety of something you've waited for so long to get as fast as possible?

i mean really. you beat the entire game. on the hardest difficulty. in less than 8 hours. while sleep deprived.

this is something awesome?

While it was a worthwhile experience that I don't regret, I certainly won't be doing it again. Staying up all night is not a fun experience. Around the last couple hours I went into auto pilot... it was really weird. I honestly don't know how people pull all-nighters in college and actually think it's beneficial.

And I also wouldn't have done it if I didn't have two friends along for the ride. Halo's been our (my group of friends, the rest are back at their respective universities at this point) thing all throughout high school, so it really was more about the legacy than the actual game. We get to say we did it, and we will.

Besides, I'm going to play through it again, alone. I'm also going to spend countless hours on the non-campaign side of the game.

I haven't played Halo since the original one, but I'm assuming the hype is all in the multiplayer. Most people just go through the single-player mode for FPS games to get a feel for things, then spend the rest of their time on multiplayer online now days. To be honest, game developers for most FPS releases are pretty much focusing on that anyway. Story-lines and single-player isn't really the focus now as much as it was then... so I can sort of understand the trend here. Single-player has pretty much become the preparation for online or multiplayer play.

While this is certainly true of titles like Halo and COD, it can't be further from the truth for titles like Fallout, Oblivion, or Mario. The popularity of MMOs has exploded in the last decade (I blame Counterstrike), but that doesn't mean the development of games that have a single-player focus are on the decline. The industry as a whole is just getting bigger.

im pretty sure he is just talking about FPS. I think multiplayer and single player are blending together more and more, pretty soon you won't even choose one.

that's fair, just seems like a big letdown to me, though i can definitely appreciate the gaming legacy, that's super cool.

as for all nighters in college, sometimes you don't have a choice and you gotta do what you gotta do to get that paper done. i once had to whip out a damn near 200 page document in about 14 hours to ensure that our 4 person group passed our year. 1 guy's contribution was two sides of a loose leaf page written in pencil, another was drunk, and another was on LSD that evening. fun.

the rage got us a perfect grade. plus then you get to say you saved the day and can guilt trip your classmates into a free night out at the very least.

speaking of Fallout3 recently. i'm heading back to the wasteland :thumb:
