First I couldn't even start a game, the Engine would crash. I had to start it up in Developer's Mode and save a game so I could do it normally from then on.

Now whenever the graphics supposedly get demanding, the engine crashes. It's not too often, but it's a complete bloody nuisance.

weird. does it generate any sort of error log? there's no reason a decade old game would demand more than the capabilities of modern systems. then again this game came out at a time when it was relatively common place (and at times necessary) to twist things around a little in order to squeeze out just a little more than was possible from the hardware. some of that twisty code is probably playing havoc with your current setup.

Playing a lot of SoulSilver recently, trudging my way through the Lake of Rage portion.

I gotta ask... What's the allure to playing those Sims games?
Just wondering, as I've never played any of them but it just seems boring and stale to me from what I've heard. I don't mean to criticize. I just wonder what it is that keeps people playing Sim games and why.
:)

My favourite Sim game is Transport Tycoon Deluxe (kept alive and well today by the OpenTTD project). The playing field is an isometric view landscape with towns and various industries like farms and factories. You make money by taking care of transport and thus supply and demand. For example you build airports and send planes between the cities and make money from travelers or you build an oil tanker to bring oil from an oil rig to a refinery or build a train to bring coal from a mine to a powerplant.

What I like about it a bit hard to say though :p: I think it basically boils down to a little feeling of happiness when I see my trains tooting along, making me money. Building my transport empire is satisfying in itself even if I've bought up all my competitors and technically have complete monopoly.

I guess it's a bit like playing with Lego. You make your own solutions to problems in the game and it's satisfying when they work.

edit :

sims 3 felt like a complete waste of time to me though!

It just says that the Engine found a problem and had to shut down.

I actually can't finish the game right now because it always crashes at this cutscene that I can't skip...

The only Sims game I ever enjoyed was the original Sim City.

I never liked any sim game aside from RCT. The Sims an Sim City just never grabbed me

Digimon Racing

It's not a terrible game, but is nothing compared to Crash Team Racing (wish I knew were to find that, for an emulator).

as odd as this sounds. try loading a save just before that cutscene and drop ALL options to minimum, both graphics and audio. i've seen more than a few WTF bugs directly related to sound in the past where the error message offered no indication to the issue. once you're past that scene save again and bump up the settings again.

it's lame but it should get you through.
