You can say this about every video game genre and literally everything in general. Sturgeon's law.

How is this a platformer problem? You telling me that RPGs or shooters don't have cheap deaths?

The influence of arcade games murdering you for quarters was dubious as ****.
Platformers barely had a presence in the arcades, consoles have always been where they thrived, I can't make any sense of this criticism.

I actually prefer SMB3 to World, it has more variety, it's more challenging, the levels are shorter but tighter, it's perfect for speedrunning.

World is also great though, it still has the best controls and physics of any 2D Mario game and that's why it has such a robust rom hacking community, there's so many fantastic SMW hacks out there that it almost makes the original hard to go back to sometimes.

I didn't grow up with it but I played Crash 2 a bit on emulator recently and it's a lot of fun, even playing it with a keyboard which obviously isn't ideal.

****ty 1st person shooters don't have nearly the amount of malding neckbeards acting like they can do no wrong.

Not as a core design principal to artificially pad out length.

But the age of the arcade and the age of the platformer had so much overlap that games that weren't coin operated were still influenced by arcade game structure. It made more sense on the NES due to hardware limitations but the SNES and Genesis still had way too many games that did the same ****ing thing for no reason. There's a reason Super Metroid gets it's dick sucked so hard and part of that is probably cause it never made you rage quit cause you had to do a flying leap of faith and just miss a platform you couldn't see.

Super Metroid gets it's d*ck sucked because it's a metroidvania, people go crazy for that genre in general.

It's funny that you use that game as an example of a platformer that isn't frustrating because while I'm pretty good at linear platformers I absolutely suck ass at Metroid games and metroidvanias in general because I get lost so easily in big maze like maps.

I even got stuck while playing the Metroid Dread demo because I didn't realize that there was a switch I'm supposed to stand on for a few seconds so it would flood the room and raise a platform that leads to the exit, I didn't think about doing that because I WAS BEING CHASED BY AN INVINCIBLE KILLER ROBOT THE ENTIRE TIME. I had to watch a video walkthrough to figure out what I was doing wrong. I needed a walkthrough for a demo, how embarrassing.

That demo frustrated me more than even the cheapest arcade games I've ever played. It's weird what people find cheap and frustrating and what people don't. Reflex heavy gameplay is my comzort zone, that's why I love arcade games and more traditional 2D platformers.

People are wired differently and find different things difficult, we don't all find the same things fun. I hate it when people try to make game design out to be some scientifically proven formula.

Weird how turn based rpgs and metroidvanias are the two genres people rave about the most nowadays and they're the two genres I have the hardest time getting into.

In summary I prefer games that are simple and to the point and have little patience for games I find too complicated.

Perhaps you were expecting the opposite opinion from a progressive rock fan. I am an enigma even to myself.

I expect nothing from a progressive rock fan.

Hey I'm a chick now don't you know I've made history?

My tastes have expanded a lot since I got sacked though, I still love prog but it's not really my main thing anymore, not even sure I have a main thing, I'm obsessed with city pop right now.

woah do you use glitchwave or anything like that or do you just know that genre off the top of your head? I ask bc glitchwave is a cool place, never would have known all those game genres existed like bullet hells and things of that nature.

Metroidvania is a term that's been around for a while, it's a very divisive term but it's the one that stuck.

And no I don't use Glitchwave, I find their rankings and reviews to be pretty bogus for the most part, to be fair it's still in the beta stage and has a really small userbase, mostly people from RYM which is a community I also hate lol.

I use GameFAQs but only for their rankings, I advise everybody to stay as far away from their message boards as possile.

Literally anything is better than MetaCritic though, you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.
