Can someone recommend fun, simple games for two players?

My girlfriend has gifted me wireless controllers a few months ago and we have been playing Mario Kart (the Game Cube one) on an emulator ever since.
Looking for more games to play.
Not even sure which genre.
Normal racing games are a bit boring but something similar to Mario Kart would be cool.
Something similar to Smash Brothers would also be awesome. (Unfortunately my laptop can't run Smash Brothers through the emulator.)
Tried some more normal fighting games like Tekken and Street Fighter but the controls are too frustrating for me.
Some Jump and Run stuff might also be cool. Nothing where you have to take turns though, this is boring.
Normal shooters are usually too frustrating to play with controlers.
Games where you have to think hard solving puzzles are also not what we're looking for.

Some more requirements:
-Not too new or otherwise heavy on the graphics. My laptop isn't particularly fast
-No online multiplayer stuff. We want to play on the same screen
-Nothing too difficult. We want simple controls and game mechanics and rules.

Thanks! I'll try it out.
For some reason most game cube games don't run on my laptop, Mario Kart being the only exception so far. Still hoping it'll work.

Probably the most lolworthy match I've had so far on Pokemon Showdown. Managed to make someone quit using only a Miltank (aka the cartoon cow Pokemon with the big floppy nipples):

Have you ever played any isometric ARPG's? Diablo 3 is pretty perfect for pick up and go in thirty seconds co-op gaming.

I don't know what those words mean but games where you have to do **** with inventory and spells and whatnot bore the hell out of me.
We just want to drive/fly/jump/punch/shoot around with as little distraction, thought and preparation as possible,
