I've played Ultima Underworld before. Been meaning to get back to it. I actually reinstalled it through GOG a week ago. Old 90's PC rpg's are my thing.

It looks legit af. And you don't need to use DOS Box? Unless you pirate it probably? I actually am pretty sure I have it on an external HD.

If you buy it off GOG it's already embedded in DosBox so you don't need to launch it manually, but I don't know if a windows conversion exist. I wouldn't think so, but never say never, since there is one for Daggerfall. DosBox is easy enough though.

I got it from gog.com. Real cheap and you get both 1 & 2.

What are some other good dungeon crawlers? I don't care how old school they are. It's a great wilderness for me and calls my soul.

Legend of Grimrock is really fun, but if we're keeping it old school, then Dungeon Master II is my personal favorite. Unreal levels of atmosphere in that game. The soundtrack is burned into my brain. It also has some really unusual ways of handling stats and such. Expect very few numbers, lots of bars to indicate relative strength instead, and cryptic symbols hinting what potions and spells do. It's not nearly as obtuse as this makes it sound like. Although reading the manual entry on how the spell system works is recommended. It's actually a very pretty and very action oriented game.

The first Lands of Lore is also a good DOS dungeon crawler with nice graphics, music and some interesting areas to explore.

Anvil of Dawn is another DOS game of the same sort that isn't mentioned a lot. I think it's a lot of fun and it has some clever ideas.

Heroes of a Broken Land is a really interesting dungeon crawler on Steam that mixes Heroes of Might & Magic style town building with old school dungeon crawling. You manage a bunch of teams of heroes, build bases and stuff. It's really original and I like it quite a bit.

Note: Some old dungeon crawlers play best if you have a full NUMPAD on your keyboard.

Yeah the ones with parties call to me the most. Managing a team and feeling like I'm rolling into hell six deep with my homies sounds amazing.

I really like team based dungeon crawlers as well. Kind of became a rarity with time.

Dungeon Master II has an interesting way of doing it too: The first character, a warrior, is mandatory. Then you go around a dark cave with cryo-sleeping heroes and wake up the 3 pre-made characters you want to help you out on your quest. So you don't get to make your team entirely yourself, but there's something about this approach that still makes me wish more games did something similar. There's a feeling of personality to each character, with their unique stats, portraits and loadouts - even though they never speak.

1st person dungeon crawlers look cool as **** but FPS's clearly infected all of gaming with that ****.

All of those old school first person rpg's play in a kinda clunky manner, but I'm very tolerant of that sort of thing. Those old RPG's with 2d artwork presented to look 3d definitely sacrificed a bit of playability inn order to look fancy.

Shadows Over Riva - which I didn't mention because it's not really a typical dungeon crawler, but a lot more story based, ditches the first person perspective when combat happens and loads an isometric perspective game board with turn based tactical combat. One of my favorite RPGs, but has a learning curve that probably kill most people's desire to play it. 90's PC RPGs didn't give a **** about user friendliness
