Just survived round 35 of the Xtreme Mode in DW5XL.

And for the few dorks that actually understand that acronym and/or give a ****, I did it with Diao Chan, aka that bottom-of-every-tier-list hammer lady.

Dynasty Warriors can be tedious and mediocre as ****, but the Xtreme Mode in 5XL is that one shining moment where they finally got everything perfect. They actually listened to the fans and critics, and made something truly difficult and challenging, where you have to plan things out rather than just jump into crowds and button mash everything into oblivion. One wrong move and that's it, you're ****ed. Your save is erased, your character growth is set back at default, and you just gotta git gud and start all over.

Plus, after a certain point, the difficulty ramps up so high that every single tiny little peon soldier on the battlefield has the same strength and aggressiveness that the named officers and generals in the starting levels have, and can even whip musou attacks out of their asses. It's disgustingly unfair. I love it.

It's such a simple game mode, but honestly, it's the only hack 'n slash game that I come back to on the regular. Even Samurai Warriors 2 Empires doesn't get nearly as much love, and that game is the ****.

Anyway, yeah, Diao Chan rocks. The funny thing is that, while she's one of the worst characters in the base game, she's actually one of the best for high level play in Xtreme. Mostly because she's hilariously fast once her weapon weight is set to light, and the last hit in her vanilla combo has an absurdly low cooldown, meaning even if you **** up and overextend yourself, enemy officers still have a hard time getting any openings. Everybody likes to go for Lu Bu or some other buff dude with a spear or whatever, and they're good for clearing crowds, but after a certain point, the game becomes entirely about headhunting, and nobody cracks said heads like dat hammer gurl.

Church. Getting stoned and starting a game as a non-officer is as relaxing as it is time consuming just to clear one map. But no matter what you're going to spend the end game using spies to kill officers and depopulate armies just so the battles are playable and even then you're going to be terrified of getting hit even once and then getting hit five more times and losing.

One of my fave video game lines is when you send Sakon Shima alone against a huge enemy army on the highest difficulty, and he's just like "They may be powerful. But I. Have. A. Reeaally. Big. Sword." :laughing:

I still say the best Dynasty Warriors game is Gundam Dynasty Warriors 3. It's not much about the difficulty, but grinding for powerful suits is amazing and addicting and the shorter battles don't have the same drama but get you in and out of battles within twenty minutes at most and keeps you constantly wanting to do one more battle and then one more and then one more. And the cell-shaded art is just gorgeous. And giant robots are cool.

Giant robots are indeed the coolest.

I'd play DWG3 in a heartbeat, but my PS3 recently ate ****, and my PC can't handle Steam, so... yeah. Maybe probably eventually.

OMG you need it. Like you get an ability that let's the super musou ability you have when in red health be the one you use all the time and using Wing Gundam's super musou that just rakes 360 degrees of the battle field with twin horizontal pillars of laser death and can clear a field of both peons and officers even on the hardest setting is the closest Dynasty Warriors equivalent to an orgasm.
