From a technical standpoint, there's one huge difference between the two consoles that bugged me to no end when I finally got a PS3 too. Installations of downloads and game discs take for ****ing ever on the PS3. The 360 will install 8 gigs before the PS3 installs 80 megabytes. I think it's some sort of horrible file unpacking system that makes for the difference.

A difference with no clear winner: The 360 controller is better at 1st and 3rd person shooters and more comfy when you need to use the triggers a lot, the PS3 controller is better at fighting games and titles with simple arcade controls that use the d-pad.

There are some region free Jap 360 imports. Not a lot, but I could name a few arcade shooters.

Also the genre that is the reason why I like 360 better in terms of the game selection. The PS3 wins on JRPG's, but I hate that genre with a passion, so that's no loss I ever cried myself to sleep over (since I could only afford one of the consoles and wisely chose 360 for the shmups).

There's been so many chances where I could've gotten an Xbox 360 at a thrift store for cheap, but knowing the infamous Red Ring of Death issue I've always been apprehensive to buy one, even for $20 or so.

I have a PS3, but I haven't really found many games that I'd probably like. My PS3 collection basically just consists of the Uncharted trilogy, Sly: Thieves in Time, and South Park. You guys have any rec's for some good PS3 games? As far as what kind of games I usually like the most, I'm an old school FPS fan and I also tend to really like platformers and Burnout-esque racing games.

It's not the genres you asked for, but my first answer for both PS3 and 360 will always be Armored Core V. I love that game to death.

My 360 is like a decade old and still fine. The disc tray is temperamental and I had to replace the power adapter brick thing a few years ago but it still runs like a dream.

I bought one pretty late in the cycle, so it's a 360 Elite (or something like that). This model didn't have the ring of death issue.

I've never actually played a mech game before, despite owning Mech Warrior 2 and Earthsiege 2 for PC. Never been able to get those to work, so maybe that'll be a good gateway into the genre. Thanks, I'll definitely keep that game in mind.
