Said **** it and restarted Half-Life 2. Yeah the shooting is kind of dated but the variety of enemies, in both design and function, is incredibly engaging; the pacing is tense but never feels repetitive like a CoD; sound design is nerve wracking at times with its general lack of music but great sound effects that foreshadow certain types of enemies; I love the moderately difficult environmental puzzles that break up combat but are never truly frustrating; and the lack of cutscenes (that Mic hates so much) or level changes makes this the video game equivalent of a long-take movie scene that keeps the momentum and player investment high and constant.
Even if the shooting isn't as polished as a Halo game Half-Life 2 is just so satisfying to play as a whole. It probably helps that it has that retro shooter feel from the late 90s/early-00s from before CoD and Halo changed the way the genre was put together so that they're often more like roller coasters with cover. I don't know if modern gamers would get as much as I do from that since it's probably a fair amount of nostalgia.

Monster Hunter World As mentioned in the Last Bought thread, Monster Hunter World came out last night for PC for the first time. This is the very first time I've been able to actually play the game and not just have to watch it on Youtube or Twitch. I'm actually playing it. And man, it feels good. I've put about 2 hours into the game so far and I've killed a couple monsters already. The combat feels really really nice and every hit you land, it feels like it made impact. Mix that with the ongoing beat down of the monsters, it makes for some really fun and powerful combat. It's also an added bonus that you're able to see how the monster is doing based on how much of its outer skin is breaking off. The more you damage it, the more it takes off. Definitely worth the wait to get the PC version. I'm loving the game. Runs at a smooth 60fps and never a single frame drop despite having a bunch of things to load all at once. Love it. |
