Not really no.
I don't have an opinion on Fire Emblem or Custom Robo, haven't played any of those. |

At the moment I'm playing some Super Mario Bros. 3. I was never that good at it so I don't know if I'll make it past the water world.
Any recommendations for SNES rpgs? I'm thinking I want to try something like Final Fantasy (never played one). I might order Secrets of Evermore or a Zelda game. |

Earthbound is a great choice too though. You pretty much can't get better JRPGs than what's on the SNES. |

Thanks guys. I'll take a look and see which I can find. I've played a little bit of Secret of Mana or Legend of Mana with some friends and I remember it was pretty enjoyable.
Some of those games are getting pricey. I was at an antique store where they were selling Final Fantasy 2 and 3 for $120 each. |

Secret of Mana is going to be a real bitch to get if you actually want the cartridge (even more so if you want the box and manual too), the prices they go for can get ridiculous.
Earthbound even more so, it was a commercial failure and thus it's now pretty rare to find, plus it had a ridiculously huge box because it was one of the first games to come bundled with a strategy guide. If you want ALL of that, you better have a lot of cash to burn, I've seen it go for about 200 bucks at maximum, around 80 at minimum. LTTP is the best Zelda game ever, the best SNES game ever and one of the best video games of all time period. And you can get that baby in perfect condition for just 10 bucks. BY FAR. skip all the others and start with this one. the two final fantasy games that came out for the north american snes 2 and 3 (4 and 6 in japan) were top notch and some of the best in the series but they're very long and very tedious with the turn based combat. it's not so bad if you use an emulator and crank up the frame skip when grinding simple combat though. secret of mana / evermore were also top notch games and have more in common with Chrono Trigger, the action is more dynamic and you have more involvement with your characters during combat. very linear from what i remember though. you can't go wrong with A Link to the Past either, i still think the SNES Zelda was the best of the series (although i haven't played through all the newest ones). what really sets Chrono Trigger apart from all the others listed though is that it takes the great elements from all of those games and rolls it into a fantastic package that still feels totally unique. multiple characters, unique action that seamlessly blends real time and turned based combat, awesome mini games, special combination attacks based on your party, time travel and multiple endings. it also features something that i don't remember very many other games ever pulling off, when you beat it you can start a new game but carry over the characters from your first play through. so you start at like level 30, this does NOT make the game easier, in fact it opens up even more challenges and story / ending options (like facing the last boss by yourself 5 minutes into the game). *edit* just noticed you're looking to buy, Chrono Trigger doesn't normally sell for less than about $100 either... |

The graphics are mediocre, the music sucks ass, the story is sooooooooooooooo bad, the battle system is horrendous, the game is hilariously short (I beat it in 3 minutes, first time playing it) and it has no depth or originality whatsoever. It's a total failure, easly the worst SNES game of all time. Last edited by boo boo; 10-16-2009 at 08:18 PM. |
