I don't think it is at all. I though the final Dénouement was perfect and very uplifting even though it is tragic. She was reborn through a physical and emotional cartharsis. Maybe I can find hope within tragedy

H.P Lovecraft's Re-Animator (1985). Dir. Stuart Gordon.

Rarely has a tagline summed up up a film so succinctly. Re-Animator takes it's central idea from writer H.P Lovecraft's : Herbert West: Re-Animator and transposes it to modern day America. What makes R-A so special is that it is a horror film virtually devoid of sub plot and analogy and is instead an absolute blast despite some lapses in logic.

The basic premise is that a medical student working at medical school perfects a way of bring the dead back to life with the use of a serum (this is never elaborated on in the film-it just works). Unfortunately it has horrendous side effects and the student-Herbest West (a deliciously hammy Jeffrey Combs) along with his fellow student Dan Cain wreak considerable havoc in what turns out to be a deeply black comic film.

Rumours are that the shoot was seriously intented but upon looking at the rushes (end of day edits) noticed a farcial element creep in and so decided to add more black comedy. This is a genius stroke with some of the most bizzare situations cropping up yet the film strikes that delicate balance between mirth and horror.

Fantastic highlights include reanimated cats and a head giving head (!). Don't let this element put you off though. From the brilliant and catchy score to some wildy imaginative F/X, Re-animator is both laugh out loud and genuinely disturbing. Some lacks in pacing and iffy acting aside, Re-Animator is a classic of 80's Horror cinema and every bit as good as Evil Dead. If you don't find the site of 'Someone off their head' a little disconcerting then stay away lol.

I just rented the The Corpse Grinders from Netflix. If I get a chance maybe I'll post a little review in here after I watch it.

It would be great if people chimed in a little more. Not everyone likes Horror but if you are then it can turn into an obsession!

How have i only just seen this thread?? I absolutely love horror films, and in particular the feeling of being 'scared' - sets the heart racing and makes you feel truely alive.

I'd like to see what you think of such films as Driller Killer, Dont Look Now, The Haunting (the original 1963, possibly my favourite horror film) and Les Yeux Sans Visage if you get a chance

Driller Killer's bark is worse than it's bite and I much prefer Ferrara's work in the late 80's/early 90's EG-King Of New York and Bad Leiutenant. Don't Look Now is a classic with the best sex scene ever. The Haunting I personally think is overshadowed by a little British film 'Night Of The Eagle' which I Found to be more more subtle. Eyes Without A Face is gobsmacking and up there with Onibaba for cerebral chills.

Your list suggests the more cerebral mind. Have you checked out Session 9 from about 4 years ago? I am sure you would love that.

I'll have to watch that. I was kind of underwhelmed by The Haunting to tell the truth but I could see myself enjoying something that's in the same ballpark but handled better.

My sentiments exactly. NOTE was a year earlier but was set in an ordinary home and not a classic mansion scenario. each to their own though.

Bad Lieutenant is stunning, There is something about Driller Killer though that completely chills my bones - i think its that feeling of absolute mental isolation the killer brings to the film.

The Haunting for me is all about atmosphere - which for me is the most important factor in a horror film. I love the fact it doesnt use gore at all (in fact theres not a drop of blood in the entire film) to unsettle the audience, instead focusing on lighting, music and sound effects. It's a masterful, brooding film that still manages to make me feel uneasy. Robert Wise is the man. Im intrigued by Night of The Eagle, i'll definately be checking that out.

I do prefer horror films that dont rely on gore and violence yes. Cannibal Holocaust just makes me feel sick, it doesnt do anything for me as a film at all (though im quite sure that wasnt the directors aim in the first place). Lighting, suspense, sound and music are essential in my eyes. I havent seen that no, i'll check it out

Also, saw a film the other Night called Nomads, you've most likely seen. The ending is truely haunting

I definitely liked the atmospheric aspect of The Haunting, but I really felt like the movie fell apart toward the end.
