YES!!!!!!
Thanks for reviewing Martyrs, Jacky. I've been tossing that one around in my head for a while, and you convinced me with this. Definitely going to obtain it and give it a go. I'll go through your other reviews as well, but one at a time. Also, if you run out of stuff to review (probably won't) or just want to do some offhanded randoms, you can go to watch-movies-online.tv and there's a ton of movies available for streaming there. I always watch flicks there, but I know I'm passing up some great ones because the folks there are mostly younger kids and I can't trust their reviews... I'd rather know what's worth watching and buying from someone like you. Looking forward to more of your reviews!

As to reviewing. One thing I will never do is limit myself to a few choices and disregard everything else. I love to find new stuff whether cinematic or musically and the day I stop doing that is the day I stop enjoying life. (A little profound lol).

In response to both Lee and Pete:
So I watched Martyrs the other night and unfortunately I could not find the original version and I ended up watching the one with English overdubs... I think that took away from the acting a lot, as I couldn't really feel the intensity in the voices and match it with the expressions on their face. To me that's a big thing because if the actors/actresses aren't completely convincing, I don't put a lot of effort into taking the movie seriously. As far as the violence, I don't mind shocking scenes in movies JUST AS LONG as it's not done for merely the sake of being as shocking as possible and the only merit resulting from that, which is one of the reasons I don't watch most of the hack & slash movies out there. I didn't think Martyrs was overdone in that respect. Thumbs up to that. The movie made sure that at least most of the gore was necessary to the story. As far as the story, it was definitely original in the context of a gore movie, so that gave it points, but I'm still not sure how I feel about the ending. Overall, I'd probably not watch it again because it doesn't really have the kind of value I'd normally get a benefit from emotionally. But that's not to say it was a poorly thought out movie. Thanks again for the thoughts on it though! I did enjoy watching it.

Any film that is dubbed definitely loses a huge amount in terms of overall asthetics and it's a shame that you couldn't find an original subtitled version.
I agree with your comments regarding the gore. Apart from films that are clearly beyond the realm of possibility (zombies, vampires etc) I do think that explicit gore should have an underlying motive in order for it to be justified (if only in terms of the characters own justification). In that respect I can handle Martyrs intensity in regards to characters actions and not merely there for sensationalism. I still think that another original language viewing would greatly enhance your views but fair play to you for watching it.

I definitely give enough credit to the movie to agree to watch it again if only to see the original version, which I'm totally open minded enough to accept that my opinion may change a bit. Currently I'm on the high side of neutral about the movie... The original movie could raise that for sure. I just know that the replay value beyond that wouldn't be there as much as some other movies I hold dear. But I would give the original a go if given the chance.

Have any of you guys seen Dellamorte Dellamore or Cemetary Man as its called here in the states?
One of the best horror/comedy flicks ever made if you ask me. I was watching Dead Alive and all of a sudden memories of this movie filled my head and i haven't watched it in years. I'm re-downloading it as I type and this time I'll make sure I always have a copy around. |

how can someone recommend the descent over a classic horror movie like halloween (unmatched by any other movie in it's genre imo - but i am incredibly biased lol). Truth is there's very few good horror movies made these days. Plenty of horror comedies and torture porn, movies filled with gore ect. Personally this is the only horror movie made in the last few years that has managed to scare me.
