I dont see whats enjoyable about watching such films, i enjoy being scared, it makes you feel truely alive... watching a woman being brutally raped isnt scary or titillating in the slightest, its just uncomfortable to watch. Is there a point to her rape (as in does it contribute to the plot in a good way) or is it purely there for shock value?

My review says it all. The film is not exploitation and is about female empowerment as much as anything but it is very uncomfortable to watch. I would say 'Irreversible's' scene was much harder to take in.

For Roygbiv:

Funny Games (1997- Austria)

Funny Games (2007 - U.S.A)

Dir: Michael Haneke

I was asked a couple of weeks ago to review Funny Games and as I already owned the Austrian film for a few years I was more than happy to review. A backlog of reviews ensued (both musical and cinematic) and this was pushed back a little.

Tonight something fortuitous happened. The 'remake' that was a shot for shot remake by the same director and in English was being shown less than a year after it's release. This enabled me to not only review the film earlier than anticipated but also see the American version for the first time.

If you have never heard of FG here is a brief sypnosis. A middle class family of three are held hostage by two sociopaths in a rural area. Subjugation, humiliation and violence ensues yet the film(s) have a remarkable capacity for not showing much of this at all. It is one of the most suggestive films I have ever seen. Everything is suggested or shot after the fact yet it adds to the authenticity.

The film constantly questions the role of viewer and participant. Thare are many instances of the aggressor's asides directly to the camera that you don't quite know what context you should view the movie in.

With a mere 8-10 minutes to go, director Haneke pulls the rabbit out of the hat. A sequence so audacious that you are lost for speech. WTF? Totally unexpected and spellbindingly original. We could accuse this scene of manipulation and hypocrisy, but it's intentions are far more reaching in it's breadth and scope.

A film that has my utmost respect for questioning as many moral issues as it it does in raising them, Funny Games is the thinking man's Horror movie in whatever language you care to watch it in.

I was watching tonight with somebody of a sensitive disposition and so had to skip the film when I came across it (was it Film Four?)... argh! Been wanting to see either version for ages now.
I want to see the sequence at the end of which you speak...

Is the English version a shot-for-shot remake like Psycho then, you're not losing anything?

'Herbert West has a very good head on his shoulders..and another one in a dish on his desk'

Rarely has a tagline summed up up a film so succinctly. Re-Animator takes it's central idea from writer H.P Lovecraft's : Herbert West: Re-Animator and transposes it to modern day America. What makes R-A so special is that it is a horror film virtually devoid of sub plot and analogy and is instead an absolute blast despite some lapses in logic.

The basic premise is that a medical student working at medical school perfects a way of bring the dead back to life with the use of a serum (this is never elaborated on in the film-it just works). Unfortunately it has horrendous side effects and the student-Herbest West (a deliciously hammy Jeffrey Combs) along with his fellow student Dan Cain wreak considerable havoc in what turns out to be a deeply black comic film.

Rumours are that the shoot was seriously intented but upon looking at the rushes (end of day edits) noticed a farcial element creep in and so decided to add more black comedy. This is a genius stroke with some of the most bizzare situations cropping up yet the film strikes that delicate balance between mirth and horror.

Fantastic highlights include reanimated cats and a head giving head (!). Don't let this element put you off though. From the brilliant and catchy score to some wildy imaginative F/X, Re-animator is both laugh out loud and genuinely disturbing. Some lacks in pacing and iffy acting aside, Re-Animator is a classic of 80's Horror cinema and every bit as good as Evil Dead. If you don't find the site of 'Someone off their head' a little disconcerting then stay away lol.

with you all the way. When I was a kid I was a bit of a Trekkie (STFU), primarily Deep Space 9, in which Jeffrey Combs had a recurring role. Man's a genius in this

Thank you!
I was thinking about this movie for DAYS after watching it, mostly because I had no idea what I was walking into when I watched it at the campus theatre.

I'll warn anyone right now: it's incredibly sadistic. The fact that no violence is showed (but suggested) is the most disturbing part. For an even more disturbing experience, one should watch the German version, since you're probably not going to be used to the actors on screen, making the experience more surreal.

I'm curious to see what you thought of the 28 Days Later franchise.

Yeah it's shot for shot. I had a quick recce of my Austrian disc today. This is no bad thing though as it's still just as tense.
