good write-up... the story of Sega reads like a tragedy so far, but they made some great games on the way. And Yu Suzuki left the company? Fack. I remember bitterly defending my poor little Megadrive back in the day, genuinely believing Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine to be better than Starwing. gah

I do think that's pretty lame. One thing I do know is that Suzuki and Naka were the companies two biggest geniuses, pretty much Sega's Miyamoto and Yokoi. Now Sega's top designers are Nagoshi and Iizuka, good designers with some great games under their belt, but they are also responsable for all the mediocre new Sonic and Monkey Ball games. Monkey Ball was a great concept for a game, the first one for the GC is pretty awesome. But I don't know why they had to make a whole franchise out of it. How do you go from kickass Ninjas with magic powers (Shinobi) to monkeys inside of balls? They are underrated, as are Dimps and Treasure, who have contributed some great games to the company. |

1. This is pretty awesome and I think you're nailing legit concerns people have and not some pre-fabricated BS to compile a list.
Secondly, this one is so god damned true. The MegaMan series should have sold its sound tracks as actual albums. I can remember attempting certain bosses (electric man, magnetic man) just to hear the friggen music. Not only this but when I found out the Swedish Metal Band “Game Over” remade a bunch of the songs, and one of them was Little Mac’s Confession from Punch Out I lost my ****. That sound was amazing and when you have the born-to-play-power-metal fingers of the sweeds tackling it…I just don’t have words. Great list boo boo, keep up the good work about the bad work. Quote:

78: Blinking screen of death Who dosen't f*cking hate this? Thankfully these kinda technical problems are rare today (unless you have an Xbox) but back then this was a huge problem, especially for the NES because of that bullsh*t front slot with a hinged cover design. A lot of times it seemed like the only way to solve the problem was... Well. 77: That blowing into cartridges bullsh*t This is what you did with any cartridge game that didn't work, but it occured most often with NES games. One thing I wanna know is why did the NES and SNES carts have to be so damn big? Their bottoms were wide and exposed the pins which attracted a lot of dust and that was usually the problem. Genesis cartridges didn't have this problem so much because the cartridge slots were much thinner. And they have been WAY more durable than NES and SNES cartridges for that reason. All I can say now though is thank god for CD's and emulators. |

odds are the size was relative to the manufacturing costs. smaller boards with more compact circuitry would cost more to make.
if anything the main mistake nintendo made with their early cartridges was assuming the kids playing their games would put them back into the plastic sleeves they came in to protect them from dust. same for the SNES, every cartridge i bought came with a snug fitting plastic cover for the bottom of the cart to keep dust away. i don't think it's so much that the sega games were better manufactured so much as the games were played a few times then the kids just went over to their friends houses to play some nintendo. going back to the master system sega games featured packaging similar to modern dvds with a spot to store the game back in it's giant case. anyone who didn't bother using those cases had just as many blinking screen issues as the next kid. |

you're right i kind of shot from the hip with that one. although as you said at the start of this thread nintendo has always been far more popular. the kids who went for sega were usually more inclined to take better care of their stuff. which is why i think there's a lot more better quality sega gear out there.

76: The fact that theres walkthroughs for every game in history on the internet, except for that ONE f*cking game I'm actually looking for God I hate it. Theres whole f*cking websites dedicated to secondary Final Fantasy characters but I can't for the life of me find any information on how the f*cking controls to Boulderdash on the Commodore 64 work. I CAN'T EVEN GET PAST THE F*CKING MENU SCREEN. |
