I also think your definition of art is an incredibly shallow one. Art is many things, it dosen't always have to reflect the human condition and indeed art can have escapist qualities to it, without reducing it to mere entertainment. Art is by it's simplest definition, an aesthetic experience, a man made creation that can provoke thought, awe or curiousity, and if you knew your post-modernism you'd know that art can be pretty much anything you want it to be. And I do think video games reflect the human condition, I think games and sports in general can be considered an art form. They require quick thinking, problem solving, memorization, exploration, alertness, teamwork and patience. It's a balance of these things that makes a good gaming experience. And because I look at video games as being an experience rather than just a diversion, I think there is great artistic potential in it. Games are not just for fun, throughout history games are looked at metophorically, they teach you a lot of skills that are also good to have in real life. Chess is looked at that way, Baseball is looked at that way, so why not a video game? I'm not even talking about games with artsy graphics, I'm saying that gameplay in itself, can be considered an art. If video games were only escapism, everyone would just play them casually, why even care to make so many websites about video games or even write about them? Obviously it's something that means a lot to a lot of people. You can look at it as just a hobby, but I see all hobbies as being a form of artistic expression, it's taking an interest to something that speaks to you and your "human condition". If art is just about expressing yourself, then video games are without a doubt a way you can choose to express yourself, especially those that allow free reign and control over your environment. Sure, the developer still has some control over the environment and what can happen, but that's where the video games feel like a cooperation between the player and the developer. That's brilliant when you think about it, you can't do that with any other form of art or entertainment. Now you're right to say that for the most part video games appeal to our escapist desires, so does action films. But unlike action films, video games actually let us act them out and experience them like we're really there. That alone makes it a step beyond literature and cinema in the sheer amount of potential it has. This is all just my opinion of course. But please feel free to tell me I'm objectively wrong because that's how snobs like you roll. Quote:
You can call me a Nintendo fanboy. But I don't see it that way, yes, I do love Nintendo a lot f*cking more than the normal person. But I see the word fanboy as being part of "the cult". I don't participate in any Nintendo fansites or forums, and in general Nintendo fanboys can piss me off just as much as everyone else, they're guilty of many of the things I've been complaining about so far, and many more things I will bring up in the future. There's nothing about this thread that should lead you to believe that this is anything other than an excuse for me to rant about my subjective opinions because that's the entire point of these kinda threads, just ask Urban. If you can't take my opinions then you don't have to, I still have plenty more to rant about, and yes I am saving some things for last, not even Nintendo fans will be safe from my rantathon. He knows exactly how I react to personal insults.
So when he pops up on a thread devoted entirely to me ranting about my personal opinions, and then telling me I'm an idiot because of how I choose to speak my mind, he knows goddamn well what to expect from me, and no, I wont take sh*t like that lightly, you know full well that I never do, and you threatening to ban me isn't going to change that. If he pulled this kinda thing on one of your threads you'd ban him on the spot. Last edited by boo boo; 10-15-2009 at 01:29 AM. |

He didn't call you an idiot, he disagreed with you.
And i've never banned anyone for disagreeing with me in any thread let alone one of mine. So you can drop that analogy right now. Stop acting like everybody's out to get you.

I just take greater offense from thinly veiled insults than I do from blatant ones. But whatever, I'll drop it. Last edited by boo boo; 10-15-2009 at 01:47 AM. |

I'm not trying to take over the thread or anything, this is just an observation I've made from a few newer games. Is anyone else becoming tired of this cliched "grindhouse" style entrance video games have been using to introduce characters? The screen goes to this weird colour and tilts at an angle then you see the character's name with usually a small tidbit of information about them, usually in a humorous manner. I saw this in games like Wet and now in Borderlands. Not only that but I saw it in a movie I saw earlier this month called What a Wonderful World: WWW. It was kinda cool at first, but now it's just boring.

i think it depends on the game. for something with very stylized visuals like Wet and Borderlands i think it works great. i can't comment on Wet (only played the demo) but in Borderlands it works really well as a momentary breather to get yourself psyched up for a boss fight.
while i agree it could easily become an overdone cliche i don't think we're really near that point yet. unless it's happening in modern warfare 2 also haha |

56: People who use save states as if they have a severe case of obsessive compulsive disorder Seriously, about a third of Youtube's content is made up of this bullcrap. Why do people even care to share this sh*t with the internet community? Wow, amazing, you have just beaten a game by erasing all those thousands of times you just died, I'm really impressed. And thanks for ruining the music assh*le, I'm trying to ignore your awful unfunny commentary just to listen to the awesome soundtrack but instead I have to hear the same first 4 notes OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. Now don't get me wrong, save states can be a great thing, they're very useful for games that can't be beaten in one setting but don't have a normal save feature or games on emulators that can't save data on their own. But stuff like this is just ridiculous, this guy saves every couple of seconds, he reloads the game every time he gets hit, every time he's gonna get hit, every time he thinks he's gonna get hit and every time he thinks about thinking he's gonna get hit. Even when he has a huge bar of health left. That's just f*cking lame. I'm sorry, I just can't wrap my mind around this. Aren't these video games? Isn't dying PART of the game? When you die, you die, F*CKING DEAL WITH IT. Whatever happened to just dying and starting all over and trying again? That's the whole point. That's why you die in the first place, it's a big part of the challenge. Any idiot can beat any game no matter how hard it is if they use quick saves and loads like f*cking mad men. It's a f*cking cop out, and when people do it for games like this..... it's just embarassing. Congratulations dumbass, you suck at a Disney game, thank you for sharing your failure with the world. I don't even consider it cheating, it barely qualifies as playing the f*cking game. The kinda person who does this strikes me as being a rather disturbed individual, someone who just can't accept making a mistake. EVER! It's the exact same mentality of a spoiled 11 year old kid. It's basically the video game equivalent of making a move at a game of chess, your opponent makes his move and right before he knocks out one of your pawns you tell him "let's start over". Or imagine going up to bat, and telling the umpire to start over everytime you strike out. People who do this aren't gamers, they're sore losers. Last edited by boo boo; 11-18-2009 at 08:05 AM. |
