I didn't miss that, I just got fired up about the other stereotypical "what's the deal with feminists" stuff. My bad. I'm a lose cannon when the word "feminism" is mentioned.
I love the ideas of Lara Croft and Samus... they rock. I was more so referring to other video game portrayals I constantly see like in GTA or racing games and I don't know what else... games where the woman isn't the hero or the role-model but instead the "prize" - not an actual character but instead just a sex object. I don't think there is anything wrong with women being angry at those kinds of representations. I was also just wanting to point out that feminists aren't all ugly fat gross people. And that I don't give a **** if the female characters have tiny waists and enormous tits, but I care more for the fact that they are portrayed as subordinate. Anyway. |

Sure there are some negative stereotypes in video games, as with any form of media, but I don't think it's anywhere as prominent as feminists claim. Nor do I think it should be taken too seriously. After all, they're just video games. If you expect deep social commentary and deep character development then you're looking in the wrong place. And what about Kratos? A big muscleman in a loin cloth, I'd say that's pretty much the same thing. Men and women alike tend to have what you'd call "idealised" bodies in the world of fantasy, that's why it's fantasy. Even Zelda, one of the original video game "damsels" has evolved into a more complex character who now aids Link in a lot of his adventures and has some pretty kickass magic powers. These are just a few examples but rest assured there's a lot more. And I'd certainly love for you to provide your own examples if you have any. Quote:

All I can say to you booX2 is that I haven't seen you this fired up in a long time. Glad the fires still lit inside.

Fair enough, I see what your saying, and I actually completely agree with you in that some women take it way too far and create some huge big feminist argument out of nothing. Come to think of it, in retrospect I agree with the fact that feminists are an annoying aspect of video games because of this. And also after thinking about it I have realised that there are actually many video games that depict females with power.
However, I was merely criticising your description of feminists and also just wanting to point out that there are sometimes video games that depict women as objects and nothing else - not personalities, not intelligent or powerful or assertive but just vaginas and boobs. Maybe most of the video games I have seen depicting women are not a real representation of all the many video games out there. |

Feminists have a great deal more to bitch about than how women are portrayed in video games. I mean, come on, there are so many problems with sexism in the real world that need to be rectified, but no...

And we DO have flat chested broads in video games. Princess Zelda, Aerith from Final Fantasy VII and Jade from Beyond Good & Evil for example. My advice to the ladies is if big t*ts in video games REALLY bother you, then it's best to avoid any kind of fighting game. Tecmo alone should pretty much rename themselves "the boob factory". Boobs are great. But I'm more of an assman, hence why Samus and Cammy are easly my favorites. |

I haven't been listening to much music lately. I haven't even listened to my iTunes for several months (probably due to my constant fustration with not having any good headphones, and a no stereo speakers for my laptop), as you can tell from looking at my sig. Now I mostly just stick to my cd players, I usually only listen to music now when I'm on the road. Everything else I've been doing with my spare time has been playing games, watching tv and arguing with Grandma about weither or not Obama is a fascist or a communist (somehow she thinks he's both). |

Just an aside about the wiimote...I think it's an interesting innovation and I don't have too much experience with the wii to be able to say more than that. But it's obvious that a lot of gamers are not comfortable with making the jump toward the very new gameplay mechanics it requires. Personally, I'm not interested in having to control a game in non-traditional ways, although I do find the DS great for minigames and other secondary features (The wario giant slingshot in Super Mario World...being able to draw the designs on t-shirts in Animal Crossing as though you were drawing with a pen etc..). I think the idea of controls that make me move more than my fingers are an interruption of the immersion that makes gaming a unique experience. I don't want to be reminded of my own existence while trying to pretend I'm someone else.
Mostly I just wish that game companies would devote their push toward innovation to the f***ing software. I realize that most of (or, at least, a lot of) the software is created by developers who are independent of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, but The companies which produce consoles still must have a ton of influence on what kinds of games are made, because they have to decide what they will release for their system.
