X-Files

So I might be the only geek on these here boards to have seen
every X-Files episode, but hopefully there are a few other fans out there.
It started out very episodic, with Mulder and Scully taking on a different
supernatural creature in each episode always offering a precarious
balance between science and mysticism, until that started getting
a little old and they decided to build up an immense and convoluted
alien mythology which is hard to wrap your head around even if you've
seen every episode. Besides the mindfuck conspiracy theory plot
which obviously appeals to geeks like me, there's also the awesome
character dynamics between Mulder and Scully which brings a lot
of subtle humor into the show, add to that one of the best casts
a tv show has ever seen, and you have an obvious classic.

The reason I bring it up is because a new X-Files movie has more or less
been announced, which sounds like a wet dream to those of us who
have been blue ballin it since the show's cliffhanger ending.

Unfortunately, apparently the plot isn't going to deal with the alien mythology.
Seeing as how the show ended with the world being on the verge of an alien
take-over, I'm not really sure how the hell they'll pull that off.
Also, the movie apparently deals with William, Scully's son who was basically
made out to be good ol' JC reincarnated, so Scully and Mulder might not even be in it.
Add to this the fact that the other X-Files movie was pretty miserable,
and I'm very skeptical despite my obsession with this show.

Well, that's all I've got to say. Any other X-Philes out there?
Holla.

I have the first 3 seasons on DVD and I found it got worse as the series went on. X-files were just that. Self contained episodes that were seeminly implausible given a plausibile answer. The whole building of the mythology which you posted about, annoyed the hell out of me and seemed an easy answer to a show that had run out of ideas. If they had STARTED with this mythology then I would have appreciated it a lot more. I still would like to see the new movie though!

cardboard adolescent 03-28-2008 06:21 PM

to me it wasn't that they had run out of ideas,
but that they needed a bigger idea to keep it from getting stale
i personally think every episode is great until they
introduced john dogget and mulder "disappeared"

jackhammer 03-28-2008 06:27 PM

Which suggested to me, that they had run out of ideas early on. Some of the episodes really hit the mark stylistically and thematically, but others fell way short of my expectations. Squeeze from Season One remains one of my favourite episodes.

cardboard adolescent 03-28-2008 06:29 PM

my favorite episode is probably the vampire one where
mulder and scully both tell the episode from their own perspective.
not sure what it's called.

cigarandyak 03-30-2008 11:10 PM

my favorite part of this show was when they did the blackmagic series. those creeped me out when i was younger.

djchameleon 03-31-2008 09:19 AM

when they first introduced doggett and later his partner I forget her name....I didn't like them....but after viewing the episodes they were in a couple years later.....I liked them as a new addition......I wanted to find out more about doggett's son....was that ever solved? I can't remember...

as far as the movie goes I'm not going to hold the first movie against them....I'm going to give this one a try with a clean slate....hopefully it doesn't disappoint.

ive always wanted to start from the beginning. My dad would always leave the tv on at night, falling asleep on the couch and i would watch some of them.

They would scare the **** out of me.

maybe tv-links has 'em.

cardboard adolescent 04-01-2008 02:03 AM

it's worth it, i'll probably download all of it on torrents
and watch them before the movie comes out

Sparky 04-02-2008 01:30 PM

Do you still get decent speeds on xfiles torrents?

Sparky 04-20-2008 06:05 PM

I'm half way through the first season, and its not as great as i had remembered. Maybe it picks up in the later seasons. Im continuing to go through them though.

Sparky 04-27-2008 07:35 PM

Okay...
Im on season #7(been skipping the filler episodes)

and im lost as ****. Cardboard, maybe you can help.

1.) in one of the earlier seasons they're is a dude who the smoking man keeps in the closet. Its part of the jeremiah episodes, and he tells him that the plan would never work, and that cigarette man has lung cancer. What the **** ever happened to this guy? Is he still in the closet?

2.) Why doesn't mulder ever get a swat team and go back to some of the places he has "alien" evidence. Like the ****ing abondoned building way the **** up north were they had a **** ton of files, or to the other secret place in the pentagon? He goes to a place, finds a **** ton of evidence, leaves the place, then complains about not being able to find any evidence.

3.)Are the rebel aliens good or bad? They are killing humans, but thats stopping the other aliens from killing humans? Or stopping the humans from giving other humans for the aliens to kill?
4.) what ever happened to the black guy who was giving mulder info? Why hasn't anyone replaced him?
5.) Skindey had that native american guy memorize that whole document on alien abuctions that was in navajo. There's some ****ing evidence right there, why not use it?
6.) How is making an alien-human hybrid saving the humans from the aliens?
7.) What the **** is with the bounty hunter? First he goes after clones, then healing guys. They never have him talking to anyone.
8.) why was the cigarrete man shot, only to be given his old position back immediately?
9.) Mulders mom kept this thing, a weapon, in the lamp. Mulder uses it once, gets rid of it. I thought the **** was more important?
10.) Theyre was a guy who tried to kill skinnerd, he called people with a computer voice. Saying skinner had 24 hours to live. Who was this guy, why isnt he around anymore?
11.) WHO THE **** IS KRYCHECK? why is he still around? first they tried to kill him, then he tried to blackmail the baddies. Now hes ****ing floating around everywhere doing everything.
12.) The smoking man was the father of mulders sister. Yet mulder is still whining about not being able to find her? Well you know shes in the state, ****ing open up the phonebook!
13.) will any of this stuff matter by the time i start season 8?

God this show is one giant mind****, i have more questions still. I could have started at season 7 and have about as much info >.<

Because the people who run the FBI and CIA are part of the conspiracy, and probably would not authorize this. Also, it would spoil the show.

They are "good" in the sense the sense of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend," but not really in the typical moral way. They're killing people to stop the "bad aliens" from starting colonization of the planet. I'll explain this in relation to one of your other questions.

4.) what ever happened to the black guy who was giving mulder info? Why hasn't anyone replaced him?

I think he was offed at the end of the first season? I'm not completely sure of that though.

5.) Skindey had that native american guy memorize that whole document on alien abuctions that was in navajo. There's some ****ing evidence right there, why not use it?
6.) How is making an alien-human hybrid saving the humans from the aliens?

It's not. In fact, colonization of the earth by the "bad aliens" was scheduled to begin as soon as an alien-human hybrid was developed, since the aliens were planning on using these hybrids as slave workers. The conspiracy was, at the suggestion of Mulder's father, working as slowly as possible to develop these hybrids while at the same time trying to develop a vaccine to the "black oil."

7.) What the **** is with the bounty hunter? First he goes after clones, then healing guys. They never have him talking to anyone.

he's one of the "bad aliens." i think.

8.) why was the cigarrete man shot, only to be given his old position back immediately?
9.) Mulders mom kept this thing, a weapon, in the lamp. Mulder uses it once, gets rid of it. I thought the **** was more important?

he's mulder's foil?

12.) The smoking man was the father of mulders sister. Yet mulder is still whining about not being able to find her? Well you know shes in the state, ****ing open up the phonebook!
13.) will any of this stuff matter by the time i start season 8?

uh.. i answered the questions i could.

Sparky 04-27-2008 09:02 PM

well you explained the hybrid part at least. Im now at the part where mulder is apparently psychic, and scully has found a navajo alien spacecraft in africa...Which has parts of the koran, bible, etc written on it.

This show is more confusing then lost...

sweet_nothing 07-25-2008 10:34 PM

Anyone check out the movie?

cardboard adolescent 07-25-2008 10:43 PM

yeah. it's just an extended episode that happens to be more melodramatic than usual. so what happened to the whole alien invasion thing?

sweet_nothing 07-25-2008 10:46 PM

I was thinking the exact same thing. When the show ended weren't the goverment after them? I actually haven't seen the film I will tomorrow. I remeber seeing the first in theaters when i was like 8 and it scared the **** out of me. But I heard this one was good.

Sparky 07-30-2008 03:12 AM

Should i go into this film expecting any answers or revelations?

cardboard adolescent 07-30-2008 12:27 PM

No, you will be pretty disappointed if you do

Sparky 07-31-2008 04:56 AM

Nah, i set myself up for it.

They ended the series in the worst way possible, i was not expecting much.

jackhammer 07-31-2008 05:05 PM

I have just begun to watch these from the very first season. Very hit and miss but it was fifteen years ago!

Sparky 08-07-2008 09:54 AM

the film would have made a bad episode.

I came in expecting it to be bad, but it still dissapointed.
