Tries to merge Black Swan, Inception and Brazil with comics, anime and videogames and the results are....... unsurprisingly vapid and sterile. Total pile of crap. 2/10 |

I had such high hopes for it. I'm still going to see it even with your bad review but that's disappointing to hear. |

^ Woody Allen's latest offering. It was really quite good, and certainly miles better than a lot else that he's written and directed this last 15-20 years. I went into this with pretty low expectations, especially as I hated Whatever Works so much it actually made me pretty angry. So much so that I actually thought about giving this a miss, but then I thought 'hey Anthony Hopkins, what're you doing here?! Maybe this won't be so bad after all'. The ending was disappointingly abrupt (but then again you can turn that around and say that it makes the thing leave a more lasting impression), but otherwise this got everything Whatever Works got wrong, y'know, right. Good performances all-round, characters aren't crowbarred into proceedings without actually deserving a place in the narrative, it doesn't take the pompous atheist philosophical standpoint that Whatever Works did, and it's just a much more interesting story overall. I never thought I'd find myself saying this about a week ago, but I'm actually looking forward to Midnight In Paris now... |
A great "feel good" movie. I've always felt James Franco has been underused and his performance was great. B

Looks like a meathead movie but this is one of the best DTV films I have seen for years. The story is slight but more than adequate and the action is quite simply superb. Tight, aggressive and refreshingly lacking in histrionics and cliche. If the director can make action look this good on a shoestring then I cannot wait to see what he could do with a bigger budget. |

Everybody who dislikes this, wtf were you expecting going in? This director has always been a terrible screenwriter, and had a sort of masoginist vibe. This movie is no different than any of his other ****. In fact, in terms of just raw action and visuals, it's his best. The music video kung fu scenes with remixed rock in crazy dubstep tone was awesome. Its entertainment, and stimulates the **** out of your eyeballs. Way better then snore fest watchmen. |
