As for The Others, I've seen it when it came out not knowing anything about it or about the twist. I just knew it was supposed to be some haunting house story. Yeah, it's just a mystery/thriller, but, imo, one executed with an inspiration. Compared to many similar films I've seen, new and old, this one breaths with suspense that goes beyond cheap tricks, but steams from the characters. I've seen this film couple times more after I already knew the twist and it holds up every time. That's because, to me, this film is very emotional without being sentimental. It's a horror mixed with grief and sorrow and with no resolution. I can't think of a worse hell for Nicole Kidman's character.

Very much agreed. Kidman was really exceptional in it.
And I definitely prefer it to The orphanage. Both good films, but while The orphanage faded pretty soon from my memory, The others are still pretty vivid in my mind.
And it does hold up really well to repeat viewings.
