Really? Although well shot and acted, I thought this was barely a step away from an average T.V special and twist aside, quite forgettable.

Yeah, I felt somewhat the same. Good mystery with a nice twist, but in the end, the film failed to really entertain me. If I wanna watch a ghost mystery involving a house and some kids, I'd rather rewatch The Orphanage. ;)

I have yet to see The Orphanage, but from what I read looks like a good film.
As for The Others, I've seen it when it came out not knowing anything about it or about the twist. I just knew it was supposed to be some haunting house story. Yeah, it's just a mystery/thriller, but, imo, one executed with an inspiration. Compared to many similar films I've seen, new and old, this one breaths with suspense that goes beyond cheap tricks, but steams from the characters. I've seen this film couple times more after I already knew the twist and it holds up every time. That's because, to me, this film is very emotional without being sentimental. It's a horror mixed with grief and sorrow and with no resolution. I can't think of a worse hell for Nicole Kidman's character.
