Burnt Offerings (1976)
In a word: crap. And I'm saying that as someone who generally likes 70s horror movies

Oh man. I watched that movie a few years back, strictly because I'm a huge fan of Miss Bette Davis. I expected it to be crap, but I expected it to be campy and fun.

It was so horrendous that I almost couldn't bear to finish it. It kind of depressed me because Bette Davis was such a phenomenal talent, and that's what she had to work with. Eek.

Also, that man who drove the hearse thing in that movie was absolutely not frightening at all. The attempt to make him frightening was so pathetic that it wasn't even comical. It was just borderline infuriating.

Seriously. I actually found him kind of humorous.

I'd like to see it but I'm worried I won't be able to stop laughing at the idea of Charlestown being some den of thieves.

It's like a watered down Heat, the term "style over substance" gets thrown around a lot but The Town is definitely one of them cases. Gone Baby Gone is much better, that said The Town is still an entertaining film. It was on for 2 hours and I went to the cinema to see it and it didn't lose my interest much, it kept me entertained enough but there was definitely something lacking.
If you live or know the place in which it was set, you'd probably find it slightly amusing.

Nothing inherently wrong with it. The performances are adequate and the editing and sound editing are very good but it just doesn't engage on any level and with actors like Evangeline Lilly, David Morse, Ralph Fiennes and Guy Pearce getting barely 15 minutes screen time between them all you wonder why they were in the film in the first place.

Worth a watch maybe but Oscar winner? Not a chance.
