It's the same with me. Although English is not my first language, I can easily watch English spoken films without subtitles, but I kind of prefer to have English subtitles on for the same reason you mentioned. For non-English spoken films (especially those more obscure) it's always easier to find English subtitles, so I'm using them very often.
I have noticed, however, that when I watch Russian films (or of other Slavic languages) I like to have Serbian subtitles on instead of English. Not just for the obvious reason it being my native language, but because there are subtle inner meanings and a feel that words have that are much easier preserved in Serbian (being a Slavic language) and can be lost in English.
