Well how will you watch it then?

YorkeDaddy 04-21-2023 07:58 AM

It melted my face off and I loved every damn second of it. Just pure madhouse fun and so well paced. I think I liked it even more than Evil Dead 2013

Exo 04-21-2023 02:28 PM

I saw Bodies Bodies Bodies the other night and thought it was fun. Good satire thrown in with a semi-interesting murder mystery plot and one hell of a comedic performance by Rachel Sennott. It was like a poor mans Jordan Peele movie.

YorkeDaddy 04-21-2023 08:17 PM

It didn’t really remind me of Jordan Peele’s work in any way but I did like it a lot. Rachel Sennott is absolutely the highlight, she alone makes the movie worth seeing

Beau is Afraid was incredible. Touches on so many ideas in such an adventurous way. There are points at the end where it tries to make up for other (excellent) parts where it gets a little over its head but that's really the only downside I saw to it. There were interesting videogamey aspects similar to parts I really liked in Barbarian, and the narrative is a ****ing rollercoaster ride of wild decisions and approaches. I'll need another watch to see if it's Ari Aster's best, but it's certainly his most ambitious in a way that really pays off. Also one of the best and most disorienting opening scenes I've ever seen, especially good in theaters.

YorkeDaddy 04-22-2023 04:44 PM

I also loved it. I did not expect it to be as funny as it was, no idea Aster could execute this kind of tone. I also have my own mommy daddy issues obviously so I connected with that lmao

Joaquin Phoenix was insanely great. The plot flowed really well and was pretty much constantly interesting. Pretty much a slam dunk for me, I definitely liked this more than Midsommar but I’m not sure how it measures up against Hereditary

Obvious indeed.

Spoilers ahead btw

A lot of the movie can easily be called plagiarism, but I think there's a severe degree of homage in the movie meant to show the kinds of things that would influence a character like that given that he refuses to interact with anything unless he's forced to. The protagonist is as if you never touched your controller in a videogame and got all of the essential narrative sequences that make more sense when you fully play the game, and with his reclusive nature I think they're saying he's understanding the world through the lens of media far more than he realizes, hence the heavy degree of reference. There are parts directly taken from Synecdoche, New York, It's Such a Beautiful Day, Mulholland Drive, and I'm Thinking of Ending Things from what I noticed, and parts of Antkind (which I'm still working on).

I prefer Midsommar to Hereditary btw and thinking more about it, Scaring the Beaus is probably his best. Hereditary drives at his most powerful messaging, but his other films are just some pure ass cinema that I can't help loving.

I might catch Evil Dead tonight. Not even that crazy about the series, but the new one looks like a blast.

This is good to see. I've been planning to see it.

Enjoyed “How to Blow Up a Pipeline”. Very fast, kinetic pacing with a cool narrative structure. There are some ridiculously tense scenes where characters are making/moving bombs that were particularly awesome. Good cast that executes the solid script well, and the eco “terrorists” have well defined motivations. Big recommend

YorkeDaddy 04-25-2023 10:46 AM

Saw Beau is Afraid again. God I love it. There are several interpretations of what is even happening and all of them are interesting to consider. There are still a couple things that I’m not sure how to analyze:

Spoiler for “Beau is Afraid”:
What was up with the guy in Beau’s apartment who falls into the bathtub? Who was he? Why was he there? Why did he look so scared of Beau? One interpretation is that Beau actually killed the tattoo guy who was dialing 911 and so bathroom guy was afraid of Beau. If that interpretation seems wack I don’t know how else to view that scene

The man at the play who says he knew Beau’s father. What the heck?

“Stop incriminating yourself”. On second viewing I noticed a lot more regarding the suburban couple that ‘adopts’ Beau. They were working for Mona I believe. There’s a brief moment where he hear Grace on the phone and she says something about “that wasn’t part of the deal” and then right after that is when Grace seems to try and help Beau out and tells him about the TV channel.

Speaking of the TV channel, my best guess is that it’s suggesting how everything Beau does, has done, and is going to do is all planned out ahead of time by his mother. Seems like a sound conclusion. Interesting concept, you could make a whole movie out of just that creepy TV channel

To what extent was the sex encounter with Elaine planned by his mother? Elaine said she doesn’t work for Mona anymore. But like, all of that sequence was weird to me. The final ~45 minutes of the movie is the only part I don’t absolutely adore unfortunately

YorkeDaddy 05-01-2023 11:18 AM

Polite Society: absolutely awesome. Reminded me a lot of Scott Pilgrim but honestly kind of better? Good performances, hilarious script, fun plot structure and pacing. 4/5

Sisu: a pile of garbage. What movie are people watching that is leading to this getting good scores? This is the most boring version of "some villainous people ****ed with the wrong guy" movie that I've ever seen. People say that John Wick fans will love it. Why? John Wick actually does **** and beats people up. Almost every "cool" thing Sisu guy does is off screen. The movie is gray, bland, lifeless, and boring. 1/5

Bacurau

Hell. Yes.

Fantastic film. Tarantino fiends would love this. Slow start with such a wonderful tone shift midway through. Doesn't hold your hand. Don't touch my f*cking hand. Gah, so good.

Dope hardboiled cop/yakuza movie. There is a scene some guys might wince at, some unlucky guy had pearls in his shaft "surgically removed".

Just watched "Dune" and it was a visual masterpiece. By the way, who else here has Firestick? I stumbled upon this fantastic website https://www.firestickhow.com/bestbuy-iptv-review.html which offers plenty of great tips and guides. It's a great resource for expanding your entertainment options.

JoeyVimsanteThePoet 11-20-2023 11:21 AM

I just watched Apocalypse Now The Directors Cut.
It was an epic movie. With some violence and offensive language. It was an epic movie on war.
Great acting.

agenderlessnerd 12-21-2023 07:29 PM

Wonka. It was so good; go see it if you can.

The only 2023 movie I saw last year BUT it was surprisingly so well done. Well, not that surprising considering I had just seen Paddington 2 in preparation. That director really knows how to pull some heartstrings!

You're not wrong there. I can't wait for it to come to streaming.

BassoonPlatoon 01-19-2024 09:24 AM

Lilo and Stitch. Every bit as good as I remember it.

HazNet04 01-21-2024 04:30 PM

Last movie I saw in theaters was Across the Spiderverse, Last movie I watched in general was Weird Science, I think.

Nefilim 03-25-2024 07:46 AM

"Remake" of Road House. Meh.

Coddy23 06-20-2024 01:27 PM

Detective Knight: Independence

BloodFoxTK 08-23-2024 04:11 PM

went to see Deadpool and Wolverine, end of last month.

such a good movie!

BassoonPlatoon 09-20-2024 08:36 AM

Thor The romance, as per usual, was not needed, but I guess they had to set it up.

Reyansh23 09-23-2024 02:13 AM

From the creators of the classic *This Is Spinal Tap* (what do you mean you haven't seen it?), comes another mockumentary, this time focused on '60s folk music and a sort of reunion gig. While it may not have you laughing out loud at every moment, it features some fantastic lines. The acting is top-notch, and the music is both performed and written by the cast. Although it gently pokes fun at the folk scene, there’s also a sense of mutual respect throughout.

Reyansh23 09-23-2024 02:13 AM

Thank You.

We had a bit of a Rosh Hashana movie marathon yesterday.

Dark City (1998): Enjoyable but I thought it was too cute and stylized, in the vein of the City of Lost Children and Delicatessen.

High-Rise (2015): Awful. Gets the tone all wrong. Painful to watch. Managed the feat of making me cringe at brilliant lines from the book expertly enunciated by fine actors because everything about it was inept and tryhard. I hate Ben Wheatley and feel stupid at trying to like A Field in England.

Existenz (1999): Rules. A Cronenberg classic. A tried and true palate-cleanser.

Drjohnrock 10-06-2024 06:04 PM

Saw Sam & Kate on hulu last night with Mrs. Drjohnrock. Dustin Hoffman, his son Sam, and Sissy Spacek are all fine actors but the movie was a somewhat predictable piece of fluff. Oh well, I've seen worse, and the location settings were nice.

BloodFoxTK 12-30-2024 02:21 PM

went to see Sonic 3 on the 27th. damn, that was really good!

Keanu Reeves was really good as Shadow.

also, Shadow looks super fluffy!

That reminds me, I've got to see if a combo DVD/VHS player I have still works.

Anyway, about a week ago, Mrs, Drjohnrock and I saw That Hagen Girl
from 1947 on DVD. It was a Christmas gift from me to her. It stars Shirley Temple (as a teenager, no singing or dancing) and Ronald Reagan (!) in the lead roles. I got it because (1) the Mrs. used to like Shirley Temple's early films, and (2) I thought it might be good for a few laughs, since it was included in Michael and Harry Medved's book The Fifty Worst Films Of All Time. It isn't a great flick by any means but I wouldn't put it on a 50 worst list. Politics aside, I never thought much of Reagan's acting, but he does OK in this movie, even if he looks at times like he'd rather be facing a firing squad (he reportedly didn't like the film). Shirley does a good job in a mostly thankless role. There is a good performance by Lois Maxwell (later Miss Moneypenny in the James Bond films) in one of her first movie roles.

I have several that I've watched over the past 3 or 4 weeks, that I can list in this thread, so I'll start with this one...

B-movie action/adventure flick about a maniacal crime boss who smuggles guns and marijuana from a small Caribbean island and rules over his underlings and the locals with a sadistic iron fist. A few entertaining moments here and there but rather disappointing overall. A title like 'Fiend of Dope Island' could've been wildly entertaining in the right hands but, unfortunately, it was not to be.

Psy-Fi 01-06-2025 06:31 AM

B&W action flick about a group of inmates serving time in prison for various offenses. The prison is a powder keg of pent-up frustration and anger which is only exacerbated by the actions of the manipulative and sadistic head of the prison guards. Much of the action seems like it came from a pulp fiction novel or a crime comic but even though it's a bit unbelievable, it's still an entertaining movie.

I'm familiar with The Cramps but for some reason I'd forgotten about that album. It was several days after watching that movie, that it dawned on me that they had an album by that same title.

Here's another one I've watched recently, while I'm here...

B&W crime drama about a life insurance fraud scheme between a married couple (an older man and a much younger woman), which goes awry under a cloud of suspicion over the widow while she's planning on taking all of the insurance money and running away with her young lover.

Psy-Fi 01-09-2025 07:48 AM

Blonde Ice (1948)

Another crime drama from 1948. This one is about an amoral society columnist with a desire for wealth & power, with no limits to what she will do to fulfill her desires.

Psy-Fi 01-10-2025 05:16 AM

B&W film-noir flick, about a narcotics detective going undercover to infiltrate a heroin smuggling operation. He convinces a prison inmate, who he helped convict, to join him to help him get inside the gang. Along the way, a woman joins them at the insistence of the convict, and various complications arise.

Psy-Fi 01-11-2025 05:31 AM

B&W crime film about the hunt for a cop killer which leads to information about an upcoming bank heist and the gang behind it. Various moments of comic relief are sprinkled throughout the film despite the underlying theme of violence.
