I'd bump that up to a 3.5/5 imo. I like all the references to Gods and how the main villains were basically Wonder Woman villains in the comics. I loved all the easter eggs and cameos that ended up happening. I'd even venture to push it to 4/5.

Can't quite recall anything in a school but maybe that's where the AA meetings in the movie or something were being held. Either way, very cool to be so close to the production of a solid movie

Very ****ing mad that I can't find showtimes for this anywhere in my area. The comparison to Eggers has my full attention, I will be seeing this as soon as I can

Yeah I could see how one could dig it a lot more than I did. I just really, and I mean really hated most of the final ~hour of the film.

- Secondhand Lions (2003)
- The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)

I'll rate these because it was the most movies I had watched in years:

- Belfast (2021)
:: Horrible movie, stupid everything, didnt seem real, good story but just overall bad movie
5.5/10

- Uncut Gems (2019)
:: This was great, ending was awesome. Made sports betting seem bad which is why I don't bet.
9.5/10

- The Quiet Man (1952)
:: Not really good, treated women badly, definitely old school story line.
6.3/10

- The Many Saints of Newark (2021)
:: Pretty good, kept ya wondering which characters were who in the real show. the plot was interesting and overall not bad
7.9/10

- Secondhand Lions (2003)
:: Stupid movie, seems like a Disney kid's movie, very 1990s vibe. Overall it just seemed silly
5.9/10

- The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)
:: Good movie, this was 2nd best in the line-up of movies watched. was realistic and the story was wild. The dude chopped off his fingers because a dude wouldn't stop talking to him
9/10

Kinda feels like a Marvel movie but a lot more free if that makes sense, like they're not being bogged down by studio interference or adhering to a wider narrative. If you don't like MCU type humor you might be bored with this one, but if MCU-style humor works for you then you'll probably laugh and enjoy the antics.

I went into this with zero expectations and ended up loving it so much. I was a bit tired so I dozed off at one or two parts of it but it's definitely a 4/5 for me.

I watched that Top Gun: Maverick movie last night.

What a cheese fest. I liked some of it and hated some of it. All the action scenes were amazing. Tom Cruise is still a star. The dialogue just wasn't for me.

I love that movie so much I saw it three times in the theater and I watched it again four nights ago.

I'm all about the action scenes they were super intense.

I ended up going to the Mystery Monday movie thing that Regal does and I got surprised with an advanced screening of Mafia Mamma with Toni Coletti.

Based off of the trailers I wouldn't have bothered watching honestly and I love Toni Coletti as an actress but it was pretty great. I know stupid reviewers will end up panning it because they feel like it's too feminist and girl power of a movie. I won't spoil it but I definitely had a good time and I'm mad that I prejudged it so hard just based off of the trailers.

YorkeDaddy 04-06-2023 12:27 PM

I skipped this mystery movie Monday because Paint was so meh but it sounds like I would enjoy that one a bit more. I might check it out when it gets a normal release later this month

Three hours though until the Mario movie, cannot wait

djchameleon 04-06-2023 01:28 PM

yeah I want to see Mario movie so badly. I didn't care when I saw the first trailer but the second trailer with the rainbow road scene sold me on it being a MUST SEE.

Yeah I was reading a reddit about Mystery Movie releases and people say Paint was the worst one they had but they had some other gems that I've missed out on.

Exo 04-06-2023 01:38 PM

Maybe I'm just a grouch but I am not interested in that Mario movie is the slightest.

Same. The games are fun, but I don't see how it would translate into a movie I'd want to watch.

Synthgirl 04-06-2023 04:44 PM

The 1993 movie is a fun guilty pleasure romp for me, and a big part of that is how different from the games it is. But I did also grow up with it so nostalgia plays a big role in that I suppose.

The Batlord 04-06-2023 11:11 PM

Bob Hoskins is the only Mario I will accept.

So shocked that Exo doesn't want to watch the Mario movie

Sucks for you guys, that was everything I ever could have dreamed of. Had so much fun. And I was in tears from laughter at one point, thank you Jack Black for being everything that you are. Pretty easy 4.5/5 from me. Only thing I did not like were some of the music choices. Brian Tyler's score was phenomenal but did we really need "Holding Out for a Hero" and "Thunderstruck" in this movie? Lmao

Also Seth Rogan. Yeesh. Come on man. Donkey Kong deserves better.

Did he at least get to say "it's on like Donkey Kong?"

Nintendo trademarked that phrase, so it would be a waste if he didn't IMO.

Renfield tonight, Suzume on Saturday, The Big Lebowski on Sunday, Return of the King Extended Edition on Wednesday with its lean 4 hour, 20 minute runtime (lol). I love when I have theater stretches like this

Bro I want to see Suzume so badly. I might see it some time next week though.

There is no way I could bother sitting through LOTR in the theater. I did it once for the middle film Two Towers I think it was and I was stuck in the front row with my neck straining looking up at the screen. It was a miserable time. Never again.

Did it make you cry? A friend of mines said that he fully expects it to make him cry. He's going to see it tonight with his partner.

I was bored yesterday so popped in to finally see Scream 6 and I absolutely loved it. I don't even care how predictable the killers were. I loved all the connections it make to previous films.

Spoiler for Only if you watched it:
I'm also hoping for a Scream 7 where they just finally let the protagonist from this one go full villain mode like she just has a mental breakdown and snaps becoming a killer like her father. I feel like they hinted at that near the end of this movie.

It did not but my upbringing and good ol toxic masculinity in society has made it almost impossible for me to cry so that's not a good metric. It is definitely a beautiful movie with some great emotional moments

I actually did not correctly predict the Scream 6 killers at all lol, I thought all the way up until the reveal that it was going to be:

Spoiler for Scream 6 Stuff:
Kirby. I thought it would be a very cool angle to take, and I thought they were setting up Detective Bailey to be a new Dewey-type character. But I'm still happy with what we got. ****ing love that movie. They are definitely teasing some sort of climactic angle for Sam's killer tendencies but I doubt they would go so far as to make her the villain. We'll see though, no matter what I'm in the seat day 1 for any Scream movie. Crazy how a franchise with six films has never delivered a true stinker imo.

Ratings for my recent watches:

Renfield: 2.5/5 - Just totally meh. Nic Cage does a nice job but everything outside of him is weak to straight up terrible

Suzume: 4.5/5 - Magical, beautiful, enthralling, funny, just all around superb. Right up there with “Your Name”

The Raid: 3/5 - Great action, some of the best I’ve seen frankly. But just not enough besides that to warrant a higher score

The Big Lebowski: 4/5 - Did not disappoint. Really ****ing funny

The Raid does not require more. It is martial arts movie perfection that exists on its own plane of accomplishment and you are a plebe.

YorkeDaddy 04-17-2023 06:56 AM

It requires a lot more. John Wick for example gives me action that's maybe slightly lesser but everything else is a lot better. The Raid is such a bland, gray movie. Visually it looks like barf. John Wick is colorful and neon and gorgeous in every frame with more interesting lore and characters. Other martial arts movies are also often a lot prettier to look at. And then action movies like Die Hard feature memorable, likeable main characters whereas The Raid's main character is just...a dude who punches good. Just not really what I look for in an action movie although I'm still happy I watched it and I will check out the sequel at some point

The Batlord 04-17-2023 07:42 AM

I'm sorry did you want the slum where a brutal urban war was fought to be neon pink?

YorkeDaddy 04-17-2023 07:44 AM

Yes

It's pretty funny that you bring up John Wick and consider The Raid subpar to it when John Wick's action scenes were inspired by The Raid and other movies that feature the single camera Hall fights. It's like you are ****ting on the movie that is even the main reason John Wick was created. So weird.

YorkeDaddy 04-17-2023 09:01 PM

That’s why it’s cool when art inspires new, better art

Key 04-17-2023 09:16 PM

This sounds like the same kind of debate to be had with someone who always says "the book is better than the movie" whenever a movie adaptation of a book comes out. You dont have to love an original if what it births is it but better.

Key 04-17-2023 09:19 PM

John Wick's stylization adds a lot to the series as a sort of dumb action flick fantasy epic, but the relatively stripped down grittiness of The Raid serves an entirely different vibe that makes it feel so much more desperate and unpleasant. Both are very similar in some regards but are very different in others but are both still god tier martial arts action movie ****.

I cringe at the thought of your Jon Woo takes.

YorkeDaddy 04-19-2023 03:59 PM

There are pros to that kind of vibe, I just don't like it as much as the hyperstylized Wick stuff. It's not like I gave the Raid a 0/10 or something. It's a good movie. Just not one of my favorites. Inherently action movies are only like my 5th favorite genre, but I'm still trying to see as many of them as I can. There's only so much time in a day unfortunately

The Batlord 04-19-2023 07:22 PM

Have you checked out the Crank movies? Crank 2 is in the running for best action movie ever.

I was somewhat lukewarm on The Raid as well, but the sequel is incredible.

I actually walked out of that movie after an hour. I went to a REALLY late showing and the first hour wasn't very action packed and I just couldn't stay awake. I have to go back and watch it.

It's such a great movie. It's more of a sprawling crime epic than the first one—in some ways I'd say it's almost a different genre of movie—but it also has probably the craziest fight/car chase scene I've ever seen in my life. To me it was the perfect mix of an organized crime drama like Election with off the rails action.
