Also watched Mr. Holmes. It was... good, I couldn't say great, but different, and Ian McKellen is always nothing less than spectacular. Yesterday was a pleasant if silly little movie and I also rewatched The Long Riders, about the exploits of the James and Younger Gangs. Finally, just now finished watching classic western Shenandoah, in which of course Stewart stole every scene. Ah, they don't make 'em like that no more!

I really enjoyed Yesterday too. Lots of fun and not at all serious, but still heartwarming and full of (of course) top tier tunes.

Spoiler for major spoiler:

Also, the scene where he meets John Lennon had me choking back tears, not gonna lie.

i grew up playing the Sonic games and watching the cartoons, so i shan't apologise for still being a Sonic fan as an adult.

Being a Sonic fan is punishment and pennance enough these days

Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Flawless film. One of the best things I've seen in the last ten years I'd reckon. Skin tight script and powerhouse performances. The ending left me speechless.

<3 yes it's amazing

I tried to watch Vita & Virginia (2018) but switched it off pretty soon. The actresses try to do what they can but the script is terrible and there is a weird bland electronic soundtrack that's jarringly at odds with the film's vibe

Today, I watched a documentary of the 2017 shooting in Las Vegas. Awful stuff.

What was the name of documentary?

They still have no motive for that one right?

For how much time has passed, there's still a lot that doesn't seem to be known about the guy and the event.

SGR 06-18-2022 04:53 PM

Anyone else seen Lightyear yet?

It's pretty crazy how little remains known about the biggest mass shooting in American history... but we'll always have Paddock's brother and the powerful press conferences he's given in the aftermath

It is bizarre - at the very least, it would be nice to know what drove this guy to do this to try and prevent it from happening in the future. To add to the collective understanding of what can make people on the edge snap.

On a happier note, I saw Top Gun on Thursday. Very entertaining.

Stating the obvious here but doing something about the availability of weapons would probably help. Europe also has a bunch of crazy, violence prone people. They just luckily don't have easy access to weapons.

OT: I finally saw Madres paralelas (Parallel mothers) by Pedro Almodovar. Not one of his best but still very engaging. First movie of his that I remember that is explicitly political (deals partly with the issue of the civil war dead which in Spain is still a controversial subject).

He's such an atypical case: a rich old guy...

We watched the documentary yesterday and the brother appears somehow even worse than in those interviews.

Apropos of access to weapons, my gf (she's obsessed with this case) says he might've been a weapons dealer or some sort of middle man and that it's a possible explanation how he made his fortune. This isn't mentioned in the documentary but according to her there's a lot else that isn't.

agreed, it was pretty good. Also queer milf Penelope Cruz >>>>>
And the other actress was great too

adidasss 06-20-2022 01:46 PM

Yes, Penelope is all kinds of awesome although I found her body a little weird in this one. She's tiny and bony yet has some pretty perky tits. The other actress I wasn't totally sold on because I felt she didn't emote too well but then she's playing the part of a listless gen-z-er and I guess she nailed it.

It wasn't meant to be funny but I laughed out loud at the scene where Penelope teaches the girl to peel potatoes when it's clear poor Penelope hasn't peeled a potato in her life...

Also, special mention to all those interiors, wow, would I ever love to have an apartment like the Almodovar ones.

I don't know if the whole story will ever come to light. It seems that with movies like these, we get one side of many. It does seem as though the whole event has been forgotten. For a lot of the media, it's on to the next tragedy. It's awful.

Yeah I mean the other girl is depressed and traumatised, I thought the acting fitted well

Sansho The Bailiff

I took home a sh*t ton of Criterion to watch before we put them out for sale. This was fantastic. One of the more moving films from the 50's you can watch. Beautifully shot and excellent story albeit very sad.

Frownland 06-29-2022 10:56 AM

What else did you get?

Saw this remaster on the big screen yesterday. Gets better with every rewatch

Word. Lots of stuff, really. Off the top of my head...

The Devil's Backbone
A Brighter Summer Day
Police Story
Blind Chance
Stalker
Thief
Blow Out
Branded to Kill
Riot in Cell Block 11
Alambrista!
An Autumn Afternoon
Le Cercle Rouge

That's like half of em. I mostly grabbed stuff that wasn't on HBO Max so I could have a chance to actually see it.

adidasss 06-29-2022 01:50 PM

I really liked some of those Jean-Pierre Melville movies, Alain Delon was/is one cool cucumber.

I don't think I've seen Blind chance but I've seen everything else by Kieslowski after it, the Dekalog being my favorite.

Nice, I recently added Riot to my watch list, looks gritty. A Brighter Summer Day is a hell of a cop too, we're lucky to have the criterion edition instead of the low res laser disc that was around before then. One of my faves.

music_collector 06-29-2022 08:21 PM

While waiting for the kids to come home from school, I watched the Danbury Trashers story on Untold: Crimes and Penalties (Netflix).

I laughed my ass off.

Top 5 most tears shed for me, also heavily badass.

I watched this movie Marrowbone last night and I thought it was pretty good tbh, dark period thriller

Also watched recently:

The Lodge
Honeymoon
Yi Yi
A Bride for Rip Van Winkle
Swallowtail Butterfly (I already posted that but it's an incredible film and I wanna bring it up again)
Love Letter
Picnic
Shrew's Nest
Uncut Gems
The Terrorizers
In Fabric
Brick
Good Time

Among others, but these were noteworthy

Everything everywhere all at once (2022)

A lot of thoughts about this one but essentially, I found it mildly entertaining, occasionally emotional although also shmaltzy and a kind of free-for-all meandering mess. The Wachowski's could probably sue for copyright infringement for some elements which may or may not be on purpose.

It's probably a much better movie in an alternate universe.

I'm just happy people are trying again with filmaking in this kind of budget sense.

But, you know, A24 is just lightyears aheads of everyone else right now.

adidasss 06-30-2022 09:42 AM

Hmm, yeah they seem to have an interesting roster (for American movies). I liked Uncut gems a lot more but that's another kind of fish entirely.

Mondo Bungle 06-30-2022 11:08 AM

Just watched First Reformed with Ethan Hawke, pretty heavy
