Continuing my marathon of generational 80s and 90s films I failed to see in my youth, tonight's foray was the 1987 box office flop turned cult classic, The Monster Squad. Starring a 12-year old cast and all of the Universal Pictures classic movie monsters, the film was rife with overacting and cheesy action one-liners, and even ended with a white rap anthem. It was everything I wanted in a film. And as luck would have it, a documentary was recently produced exploring the cult revival of the movie, aptly titled, "Wolfman's Got Nards!" |

Train To Busan (2016, Yeon Sang-ho) It was our Halloween night feature. Surely the dumbest zombies ever created but one of the best of its kind that I've ever seen. It's really a morality tale at heart which makes all the silliness bearable. Recommended. |
I'm looking forward to seeing this one in 2022 just to see what Berkley has in him with this kind of medium:
Peter Dinklage, Rainn Wilson, and RuPaul Board Aniventure’s ‘Hitpig’ |

Dead Ringer (1964, Paul Henreid) Bette Davis plays both estranged twin sisters who confront each other after the death of the man who was coerced into marrying the gold digger. Trouble is, I didn't have much sympathy for the one who was supposedly in love with him. She's broke, in debt and jealous of the lifestyle that her dead one time beau gave her sister. So what? Shoot her? Ok. She and the all the scheming chisslers get their comeuppance, though. The way Henreid works it all out plays like a good Hitchcock tv ep. Worth a single viewing. Davis was a pip. Todo sobre mi madre (All about my mother) - Pedro Almodovar I haven't seen this one in many years, but I've seen it so many times that some things were still familiar to me. What I forgot about was just how funny this movie is (or maybe now that I understand much more Spanish, I understand the humour better). It remains one of my favorite movies and the soundtrack is gorgeous too - Tajabone kills me every time. It's also wonderful to see an almost exclusive female cast, all of which are fantastic (well I'm not totally sold on Cecilia Roth but she does alright). It's amazing how rich Spain is in fabulous and colorful characters. |

Freaky. Best horror movie I've seen in years. It's kinda stupid, but that's what I like about it.

Hable con ella (Talk to her) - Pedro Almodovar We're doing a small Almodovar refresher cycle, focusing on what I consider his artistic pinnacle trilogy (Todo sobre mi madre, Hable con ella, La mala educacion). This one is less funny and less emotional than Todo sobre mi madre, but still has plenty of memorable scenes which pack a punch. Like for example this Caetano Veloso showstopper: Or the Pina Bausch scenes, the corrida scenes, the silent movie etc etc. many of which are now iconic. I loved Rosario Flores as the matador. I didn't know she was actually a singer and not an actor until quite recently. Almodovar has a fantastic talent in finding exceptionally interesting people to play in his movies. The music is of course fantastic. I'd give it a 4/5 (with Todo sobre mi madre being 5/5). |

The Verdict (1982, Sidney Lumet) A great director, a David Mamet script and Paul Newman lead a very good supporting cast in a story about a medical malpractice case that redeems an alcoholic attorney at the bottom of his personal and professional life. Mason (Newman's foil-defender) has a bone-chilling monologue about the corruption that keeps the entire legal process going which seems especially poignant now. |
Hands of Orlac is on youtube for free (I think it's because it's public domain.) and I think the score they used for that upload was even better.
I remember watching Nosferatu on Netflix and absolutely hating the score they used. I think if they used something similar to YubenTuben's Hands of Orlac it'd make it much much better. |
Is that a thing? Is there a thing where bands or artists will just remake their version of a score for a silent movie?
|
Art Zoyd has done that with Nosferatu, Metropolis, Häxan, and Faust.
It's also pretty common for orchestras to perform a live soundtrack for a film. I've seen the Alloy Orchestra play an original soundtrack for Metropolis and a John Luther Adams symphony performance for The Passion of Joan of Arc. Went to the latter thinking that it was a John Coolidge Adams piece they were playing (as you can tell by his name his music is far cooler) but both were still great experiences. |

Wasn't there a famous band redo of the Fritz Lang's Metropolis score? Edit: Yeah, there have been a few. |
I finally watched Mädchen in Uniform, it did not disappoint.

Based on this list, I went searching and found a lot of those are available to rent, but so far the only free ones I could find are King of the Mountain on Tubi and Running On Empty (Fast Lane Fever) is on YouTube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEkZwcZW40U&t=358s King ot Mountain was a total cheese fest but had good race scenes. Starting up the other right now. If anyone happens to find links to any of other ones, pass it along please. |

Btw, Two-Lane Blacktop is hardly forgotten. It's well known among movie buffs. The Criterion Collection added it in 2007. Decent streamer. |

The Handmaiden, directed by the legendary Park Chan-wook, is another absolute slam dunk for him and an enthralling romantic drama with many twists and turns. The two and a half hour runtime absolutely flew by for me, every scene is so beautifully shot and consistently engaging, the plot moves along quickly while still leaving time for us to really get into our protagonists' shoes. Loved every second of it, check it out people |

Holiday (1938, George Cukor) Another Katherine Hepburn-Cary Grant pairing. Cannot sit through Bringing Up Baby and The Philadelphia Story is tolerable, mostly because of Jimmy Stuart. This one is about Grant deciding not to marry a dull heiress to billions of ducats in favor of the excitement of independence - and the heiress' sister, Kate Hepburn. Funny in parts. |
