Victoria
A woman meets a group of guys at a night club and their night escalates through a series of crimes. Done in a single take that feels like it's just doing it for technical cred at first, but as the movie goes on it helps capture the momentum and freewheeling energy of spending a night with people you don't know too well (though they get into more intense **** than most people) as well as Linklater did. Slow burning at first, but has hella suspense and very organic character chemistry (probably from the improvised dialogue). I dug. Spoiler for .:

I watched a Korean film called House of Hummingbird tonight and it reduced me to quite the emotional mess

I've seen that one, I remember it being a lot more boring than I thought it would be though

I'll bet Russian WW2 movies are a great way to clear out a party.

Sorry to Bother You
Hilarious. Some movies get over their heads with surrealism but this movie maintains its sincerity amid its weird and cinematic elements. To make a lazy comparison, it's like Get Out except it doesn't sacrifice the script for the message or vice versa and leans more heavily into the humour. Took too long to get around to it I don't think I would've caught the BP symbolism if I watched it when it was released. |
Ooh yes great film! And Tessa Thompson is a ****ing queen. By BP you mean Black Panther? I know too little about the black civil rights history to have caught any symbolism

Boots Riley is the illest. StBY was one of those films I bought immediately after seeing. It's perfect. I want that The Future is Female Ejaculation shirt and the MURDER/KILL earrings so bad.

Going to watch this again soon when I get the Blu Ray. The whole thing is wonderfully shot, but it's such a miserable movie. Abusing a small child till he himself becomes cruel and violent. Didn't know this till just now, but Aleksey Kravchenko (The Lead of Come And See)is in this movie! Really cool to see him play the role of an older Russian officer, and the character reminds me of the partisan leader Kosach. |
The Assistant
A slow paced but effective commentary on toxic soul destroying corporate culture |
Brought over my copy of "Who Killed Captain Alex?" and blew my friends' minds. Brought some brews too, but this is such a hilarious film. Please buy it, give these guys money to make more movies, they're all a treat. |
Enter The Movie Fanatic
Well, I like good movies, anyway. But I'll take a chance on a promising story. Turner Classic Movies have been unloading a bevy of great ones lately. And if you still have a cable connection their website/app gives you On Demand access to every aired film for at least a week. I'm trying to watch as many as I can before my full time gig starts up again. So forgive the blather. ;)
https://i.cdn.turner.com/v5cache/TCM...2014042154.jpg Beyond A Reasonable Doubt (1956, Fritz Lang) To demonstrate how an innocent man could be sentenced to death on purely circumstantial evidence a newspaper publisher and a former reporter turned novelist find an unsolved crime and plant evidence that will condemn him while withholding direct evidence of his innocence and expected acquittal. Of course it doesn't work out as planned. And getting to the great ending is sometimes interesting. Some say this was director, Fritz Lang's (M, Metropolis) best American film but it doesn't hold a candle to Scarlet Street, imo. Dana Andrews as the writer is nicely cast. Joan Fontaine as his weary but loyal fiancé is too cool, especially up against the dippy but tough bottle blonde strippers that Andrews has to ingratiate himself with in order to carry out the big scheme. It's all an uneven affair - from the casting to the lighting (great nighttime shadows and contrasts but abysmal indoor floodlighting) but fun to watch once. |

Just watched this. I really like films that let you catch only glimpses of whatever entity is doing the spooking, and for the most part this got my hairs standing on end. Some of the effects don't stand up, but it was still a pretty decent film. I really need a horror film that doesn't show me everything, that makes you feel like none of the characters are in control of their situation. I need to feel like I'm not sure what I just saw, something to disempower me. |
Japanese and Korean horror are some of the best horror out there.

I last saw UNCLE BUCK (1989) on VHS :)

I tried watching the new Bill & Ted movie. I got about 20 minutes into it before giving up.

Hennessy (1975, Don Sharp)
Not a bad 70s political thriller, whose promotional team at the time touted Queen Elizabeth's dismissal - though her appearance figures prominently in the last third of the film. In it Rod Steiger plays a former IRA operative bent on revenge after a British soldier (inadvertently) kills his wife and child. Lee Remick joins Steiger with the Irish brogue and rounds out a cast full of illustrious British actors. It's an above average thriller streaming on APrime. There's a poor copy streaming on YouTube as well. https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-djaWD_0M0...r_M-113_EA.JPG A hairy Patrick Stewart and Steiger |
Watched Tenet in the IMAX. It was so loud I went to the usher to complain, they said it was just an extra loud movie so they couldn't do anything about it. The rest of the movie I had to cover my ears on all the action sequences. The plot is obviously very convoluted but the horrible sound mix is by now notorious, a lot of the crucial dialogue is unintelligible. If this was the movie to get people back into theatres, they made a huge blunder out of it (just technically, leaving the merits of the plot aside). Would definitely recommend to skip seeing it in the cinema and wait for the digital version with subtitles.

It's too late for angels!!

The Angel Levine (1970, Ján Kadár) Zero Mostel is an elderly Jewish tailor with a dying and a crisis of faith. In comes Harry Belafonte as a former street hustler-turned-angel who must perform a miracle in the life of a mortal in order to prove - well, I suppose that's he's worthy of wings. Based on a short story by Bernard Malamud this film is a great late 60s New York City version by Hungarian born director, Kadár; a hip parable of sorts that leaves you with a few things to consider. Recommended. Currently on the Criterion Channel but a watchable copy can be found on YouTube. |

Just re-watched Cabaret, one of my all time favorite movies, still blows my mind. Such amazing performances, one of the very few musicals (along with Hair and Grease) whose music I really like. I still can't believe how Bob Fosse, who is a dance choreographer originally, managed to film it all so well. Complex, layered, moving, fun. Love it. |

Stoner watching the first Captain America movie: Bro I got an idea. 2nd stoner: Is it terrible? 1st stoner: Yes. |
I remember that movie being really good despite being based on an overdone rip off of Wolfenstein.

Meh.

Just took in the first of the 14 Sherlock Holmes films - Hound of the Baskervilles (1939). This is from the Blu-ray box set I touched upon in my latest member journal post about my Arthur Conan Doyle collection. Really enjoyed it!

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm Started off really good, maybe even better than the original, then it sorta fizzled out. Not without its moments and still a good watch, but you're better off watching Who Is America?. Spoiler for funny spoiler:
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon...._AC_SX342_.jpg Doctor Sleep Obviously no Shining, but I dug it. Pretty engaging and full of awesome sequences which is no surprise from Flanagan. Biggest complaint is that a lot of the plot was pretty videogamified in that the protagonists basically level up to a final boss. Liked the more subtle cinematography/background objects callbacks to the Shining a lot. |

The Lighthouse Could be this generations The Shining. An absolute bonkers film that has ZERO shortcomings imo. Powerhouse acting, non-pretentious script, beautiful visuals, abstract imagery, and perfect pacing. I loved every second of it and can't wait to watch it again. So many amazing moments from both Dafoe and and Robby Patt who is becoming transcendent. Dafoe was born to play this role and Pattinson keeps pace just as well. ...Why'd ya spill yer beans? |
