can I watch The End of Evangelion as a standalone film cuz just looking at it it's somehow the greatest movie ever and I haven't even seen it or hardly know anything about it

someone also recommended it as a possible tearjerker with traumatic parental themes that I was unaware of so I feel like every second not spent watching it is just a waste of existence

Did you ever check out Evangelion?

Dude, I binge watched the original 3 Death Wish movies not too long ago. I'd never seen them. Still need to watch 4 & 5.

I haven't been able to bring myself to watch the Bruce Willis re-boot. I did see the Kevin Bacon movie Death Sentence that was based on the book's sequel.

Wasn't there a recent re-make under a similar title with an actor that looked just like Charles Bronson?

vinyl collector 12-11-2018 09:49 AM

Last night... my favorite movie... The Shining... directed by Stanley Kubrick with Jack Nicholson.

[MERIT] 12-11-2018 01:56 PM

I came to realize that I'd only seen Death Wish 1 & 2, so I watched the third one. As a firearm enthusiast, I enjoyed Bronson's use of the .475 Wildey Magnum. While I enjoy a great vigilante as much as the next guy, this movie was a biiiit too over the top for my liking LOL.

I'm honestly not sure if I'm Shinji, Asuka, or Misato but none are promising possibilities.

Just now watched Papillion. Good film when a human has a will to win in fight with fortune. :)

MicShazam 12-12-2018 03:23 PM

Watched Steven Spielberg's "The Post".
Load of crap.

That's my review.

innerspaceboy 12-12-2018 03:56 PM

Just watched Repo Man for the first time. Still working my way through all the generational classics I'd missed the first go round.

Last night I saw Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas and The Bells of Fraggle Rock in the theater. I never pass up an opportunity to see Jim Henson on the big screen. Fingers crossed for The Muppet Christmas Carol next year.

The Batlord 12-12-2018 03:59 PM

Watch Home Alone. It's the ultimate Christmas movie.

Wtf even was that movie

That's one of my all time favorite movies right there.

REPO: The Genetic Opera. I was part of the grassroots advertising team when that premiered in NYC.

I agree, except I've watched it so many times that I simply can't stand it anymore.

Gremlins is another good christmas movie and I'm not quite sick of it yet.

The Resurrection Of Jake The Snake [2015]

I couldn't recommend this documentary more highly, especially if you or someone you know suffers from addiction.

This is a really cool little documentary that's basically about that super edgy, slightly damaged kid you knew in high school, and what his life is like after he left. KingCobraJFS is a "YouTube" personality who lives in the lonely city of Casper, Wyoming. He spends most of his day smoking, drinking, and riding around town on his half-broken fixed-gear. It roughly covers two days with this dude and gives a stupendous look into his psyche. It's brilliantly edited as well and has it's own great score to boot. Highly recommended.

At first, not really. It didn't seem like the gem that it has always been made out to be. But watching it again, I really liked it. Gene Wilder gave a great performance. It was definitely a lot better the second time around.

Nice. Yeah it's one of my dad's favorite movies so we watch it all the time. That and Raising Arizona. I've always loved Gene Wilder. Definitely was an A+ actor in my book.

[MERIT] 12-14-2018 10:09 PM

It was the same with when I finally watched Caddyshack. Didn't really sink in the first time around.

MicShazam 12-15-2018 09:09 AM

Watched The Hateful Eight. One of Tarantino's better movies, but I'm still disappointed that he's of course going to resort to a final act full of nothing but grotesque cartoon violence like - of course - he's always going to. First 2 hours were good all the same. Even if some of the dialogue is a bit heavy handed. A couple scenes where I wanted to turn to Tarantino and say "Yes. I get it. You can move on."

Oh well. Good enough movie. Jackie Brown is still the best Tarantino movie to me.

Oriphiel 12-15-2018 09:45 AM

Hateful Eight is adorable. Definitely the best movie about a white supremacist and a black supremacist coming together to hang a woman.

Thom Yorke 12-15-2018 11:43 AM

Has anyone seen The Favourite yet? Yorgos Lanthimos to me is the most interesting filmmaker working today (The Killing of a Sacred Deer in particular is one of the best movies to come out in a long time IMO), and this is the first one that has generated Best Picture kind of buzz so I'm really excited for it.

MicShazam 12-17-2018 10:18 AM

In an effort to leave myself alone with my mind as little as possible today, I watched Bram Stoker's Dracula again (the 1993 Coppola movie). Been a few years since I last watched it, but I see clearly why it's still one of my all time favorite movies. It's beautiful and atmospheric like few other movies. I caught endless little details of set design and editing that helps set a very particular "gothic romance" type of atmosphere. I love how the ending - the final showdown with Dracula - is tragically romantic rather than a mere action scene or horrific, bloody climax. No wonder chicks dig this movie so much. It's a heart breaker!

The movie makes me wanna say "they don't make them like they used to". It's just so damned impressively made. Seems to me that "big budget movie" mostly means sterile CGI these days. Bah! Give me fog machines, fake blood and creature makeup any day of the week.

The soundtrack by Wojciech Kilar is absolutely stunning and contributes mightily to the dense atmosphere of this film.

I generally hate horror movies, but this one is still a 10/10 movie to me.

The Batlord 12-17-2018 12:31 PM

I love how the asylum scenes remind me of Tim Burton Batman. You can't tell me Coppola doesn't have a sense of humor.

An actual funny moment in the movie is where Coppola cuts from a beheading to a closeup of some meat on a dinner table, causing you to go "eww" when it cuts, even though it looks appetizing when the camera zooms out.

Oriphiel 12-17-2018 02:26 PM

Demon City Shinjuku, dubbed

****in' classic

I need to watch that movie again. I'd seen it a few times around the time it came out when I was a kid (it was a movie to make me scared to go to the bathroom) but a few years ago I watched it for the first time since the 90s and was surprised by just how much of a stylistic statement it was. I guess you could call it a horror movie, but it felt more like Coppola crafting something he just thought was cool as all ****ing **** than anything else.

MicShazam 12-17-2018 02:31 PM

Yeah, the atmosphere and style is where a lot of the enjoyment comes from. I think it works very well as a story though. Even if some of the acting is on the cheesy side. Most of it, in fact.

But the story still works very well and there's just so much to look at. If watched in the dark, with good volume to let the soundtrack do it's thing, it's quite an experience.

This time, I noticed so many things I never noticed before. So many small details and effective ways of transitioning scenes or tying things together thematically. I've got a whole bunch of favorite scenes as well. That chase near the end where the sun is going down as they race after Dracula's carriage gives me goosebumps!
