Wait were DVDs popular in 1999?
|
Pretty sure I bought The Matrix on DVD.
|
I thought that DVDs were videogame versions of movies when I was a kid, like it was a new type of PlayStation or some ****.

Been sick the past few days, watched through a series called Hip Hop Evolution that goes through a detailed look into how hip hop started and how it's changed. It was really good, very well done. Probably revealed things that have never been documented before.

Just watched Punch-Drunk Love. So ****ing good. Paul Thomas Anderson's use of colors is spectacular in that film. Also far and away my favorite Sandler performance to date (although there isn't much competition there).

I would say I'm definitely more inclined towards his serious performances after being burnt out on so many horrible comedic ones (even the alright ones lose their kick after awhile- there's only so many times one can watch Happy Gilmore). I heard he was good in The Meyerowitz Stories too and that coupled with the interesting dialogue direction in that film will likely lead me to watching it in the future.
And mother****er I mixed up Paul Thomas Anderson with Wes Anderson for the quadrillionth time. Gotta stop mixing my pretentious Andersons up. |

^have yet to see it but I'm craving either Royal Tenenbaums or Darjeeling Limited. I love both.

I like most Wes Anderson movies, but Grand Budapest Hotel and The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou are my favorites by far.

I think both just nail that Anderson quirk in a way that makes both great feel-good movies. Plus Willem Dafoe's character in both movies cracks me up every time. |
I prefer his brother Eas.

But yeah, he's got a style of his own. It's incredibly visible in Grand Budapest Hotel. All those straight lines in corridors and rooms makes it really visible how he alway pans the camera sideways or zooms it, but never ever changes the angle even a little in any one particular shot. There's a very distinct rhythm and feel to his movies. |

Winter Sleep
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....HL._SY445_.jpg Director: Nuri Bilge Ceylan Country: Turkey Genre: Drama Year: 2014 Running time: 3 hours and 5 minutes Been putting this one off for a long time. I mean, look at the run time ffs! Turned out to be a really interesting movie. It's 99% dialogue driven and so gripping that the 3 hours almost fly by if you're in the right sort of focused mindset when you watch it. I'm not gonna bother with any kind of synopsis. We've got IMDB for that: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2758880/ Basically, the movie is incredibly beautiful to look at, superbly acted and finds a balance between the serious and the humorous. It also manages to be a somewhat patient movie, without ever feeling slow. Don't fear for long passages of nothing happening, because the movie has none of those. But individual scenes do tend to be very long. If two of the characters sit down to talk, don't expect the scene to end for the next 10-20 minutes. I thought the dialogue in the movie was incredibly realistic. It really captures how people miscommunicate, hold grudges and fail to really see their own behavior for what it is. The entire plot is centered around the slow development of one arrogant man who dismisses the idea that he's doing anything wrong and belives his self delusion to be self insight. But don't think that it's a pretentious film. It just understands humans very well and takes a long time being incredibly observant about it. Much recommended. Mondo would probably dig it. |
You got a car. I don't. I'll bike for as long as I can but you're gonna have to meet me 367/400ths of the way.
