^ Best film I've seen in ages, and probably my new joint-favourite vampire movie (the other being, of course, From Dusk 'til Dawn), which is weird as the overall concept is, on paper, actually pretty stupid. Goes to show what heights good direction, writing and performances (Malkovich and Dafoe are fantastic in this) can take a film to. |

This weekend I watched Der Tunnel, a German movie about a group of people building a tunnel from West to East Berlin to smuggle people out. I liked it.

I don't want to give stuff away but the best way to say it is basically it has the same type of plot and same predictable twists and turns of just about every movie ever made about similar subject matter. It was tedious to watch the movie slowly reveal things that were blatantly obvious to me as viewer much earlier on.

A loose remake of the classic TV play from Football Factory director Nick Love but don't expect FF part 2. This was much more subdued and not all that violent. However because I'm such a big fan of the original, I couldn't shake that out of my head and a couple of scenes directly lifted from the original were superfluous and nowhere near as powerful. Odd film in that I simultaneously liked and disliked it. The 80's music was generally terrible though

spoilers: it seemed so far fetched that his doctor would go along with being his "partner" for what, 2 years? How does he do that and still have hundreds of other patients, especially those that are supposed to be most aggressive? I didn't understand the need to blow up that car either. Seeing Rorsach in it was cool though. |
