Logan Lucky. Spoilers to follow soooo.

Pros: Adam Driver killed it. Daniel Craig has finally learned how to do an American accent. The heist was a lot of fun, tightly written, and highly detailed. It was shallow fun.

Cons: Seth McFarlane's character was about as nuanced and convincing as this disguise.

https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/Ek4AA...EG1/s-l300.jpg

In addition, I found that the story lacked conflict of any kind, despite there being lots of opportunities for it. It was more or less a perfect heist, until the spinning-top-moment at the end, which I think helped save the ending. Howeverrrr, I really felt like they could have used 30-45 more minutes to give us some actual meat: WHY did Channing Tatum want to rob the venue in the first place? HOW did he know what to do and HOW did he learn how to do it? WHERE was the conflict? There were almost NO stakes and no appreciable risks taken during the entire course of the film. The NASCAR drivers served absolutely no purpose whatsoever and so wasted screentime--they could just as easily have been janitors or spectators or maintenance men or fed-ex guys or whatever--they contributed nothing at all to the story.

I appreciate that the lack of conflict made the story surprising in a way, because conflict is part of the film formula, however... it also made it kind of dissatisfying. Nobody wants to watch another person attempt to reach a goal and achieve it easily, quickly, and without complication or growth from it. So it was a fun film, but a better premise than story.

I really liked the soundtrack for Logan Lucky. There were a couple of old gems that I'd never heard of before it, and that was one of the main things I took away from it. It was an entertaining and fairly memorable movie, though, even if it was incomplete.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 12-30-2017 07:58 PM

havent seen the movie and probably wont check it any time too soon but i love me some adam driver

Paedantic Basterd 12-31-2017 04:29 PM

Table 19.

People hated this. I'm still not sure why? It was a cute rom-com. It wasn't perfect, but it was far from awful. However...

The Room.

Oh, hi Mark.

Favourite scene, closely followed by the part where Johnny knocks everything off the mantlepiece and one of the paintings falls against the camera hood.

Yeah, reminds me of that joke about Star Trek: "Kirk and Spock beam down to a planet that seems pretty ordinary, but after a while it becomes clear that everything is exactly as it seems."

Yeah...

This film (and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) are hands down the best films this year. This fucking film fucked me up so bad. Anyone remotely interested in art-house films needs to see this. As far as Yorgos Lanthimo's films go, this is his best effort. Dogtooth, Alps, and The Lobster are all brilliant, but this is his masterpiece.

Better than The Lobster? I really need to see this.

i thought the trailer gave too much away but it looks good still, gonna have to check it out cuz del toro is the man

Chula Vista 01-05-2018 09:40 AM

Welcome back Chio. Del Toro is indeed the man.

Just watched Looper for the first time in a couple of years. Movie making and story telling just doesn't get any better. Easily in my top 10 of the past decade.

it actually does not give much away....and is very deceptive

It IS perfect and adorable. Way better than Crimson Peak. (I liked Crimson Peak but the dialogue was kind of bad)

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Guess I'm one of the few that is not scared to write an opinion about this movie on this website. While this movie has gotten some well deserved criticism, I still think it delivered what it was meant to deliver. People are complaining that the story went too far away from the original intent of Star Wars, but how the hell are they supposed to introduce new characters and develop those characters without the story being a little different. I personally love this movie and I'm looking forward to seeing it in IMAX with people at my work. I saw it a few weeks after its release, and I still enjoyed it.

I would probably still rate Rogue One as the best and The Last Jedi would be 2nd, with The Force Awakens taking 3rd place.

This - the trailers don't tell you **** about what this movie's gonna be like. It's quite the curveball once you actually see the movie. Not that the trailer doesn't give you some idea, but the tone is completely different than what I was expecting and I really enjoyed this movie.

Typical Frownland response with the "I don't understand why other people like stuff" mentality.

Learn a new trick, man.

Can you tell why I cba about modern Star Wars films? I was just responding to this part.

Considering it's not exactly popular to talk highly about Star Wars at this forum specifically, I'd say my post is warranted. Though to be fair, you didn't read my whole post so I can understand your confusion.

I haven't seen it so I can't really comment on that. It's fine if you dig it mate, just don't break a wrist jerking yourself off about it.

I haven't watched it yet. Wasn't too impressed with the two other new SW films, although I didn't exactly hate them.

The trailer and the things I've read critics say about the new one just doesn't convince me that I really need to see it.

Problem with new Star Wars is that it's all hype.

It's STAR WARS, but not really, since it's not a worldwide revelation.

I'll take my Rick and Morty any day of the week for contemporary scifi.

Yorgos Lanthimos is hands down one of my favorite modern directors. His debut album, Dogtooth, I watched it years ago but watched it again last night and has not lost a shred of insanity. The way he depicts families in his films is really unsettling, and usually disturbing. Great film, great, great film.

I, Tonya

possible unknown fact:

I fucking love figure skating

that being said how could i not be excited about a film about the first woman to land a triple Axel in combination with a double toe loop!!!!! (the beginning of the end credits shows the actual footage of this)

then to add fuel to the fire the first review i see is "This is the Goodfellas of ice skating"

all this being said......This film is soooooo good

look you'd have to be pretty out of touch to not know Tonya Harding and "the incident"...that alone already makes a good film....but this really gets into the abuse she endured for basically her entire life

her mother physically and mentally abused her
her husband abused her
the skating federation abused her (basically said she was white trash and was not a good fit for a figure skater....even though raw talent was there)
the press abused the shit out of her

and then there was "the incident"

this is very well written, well acted and just well done

movie of the year? No

still a great film about a very interesting piece of history

seeing Darkest Hour later today :)

Major kudos to Margot Robbie. Harding was damaged goods from the get go and was also surrounded by trash her entire life. I feel bad for her. This movie brings it home.

Like you said: Insanity.

How the **** does a movie like this get made?

Side note: The "son" is not faking playing the classical guitar during that scene. Hristos Passalis is a serious player.

Paedantic Basterd 01-07-2018 04:17 PM

I'm excited that the reviews for I, Tonya are coming in so positive because I love Sebastian Stan despite having the absolute worst filmography I've ever watched the entirety of. Can't wait until it comes to a theatre round here.

Chula Vista 01-07-2018 04:25 PM

Margot Robbie is funny as ****.

Chiomara 01-07-2018 04:42 PM

I'm DYING to see I, Tonya. When I was a kid I'd sometimes have my barbies reenact the Nancy Kerrigan attack (though in my version Posh spice and the headless Ken doll were also involved)

Just got done with watching Nocturnal Animals. That movie is one of those gut-punch movies that make me feel all depressed when the credits finally roll.

https://filmreviews7.files.wordpress...psisjmlkiv.jpg

Michael Shannon was great in this movie, and so was Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams. All three are among my absolute favorite contemporary actors.

All the other actors were good, The soundtrack was great, great set design, costume design, lighting, fantastic cinematography all the way around...
I have to check out more movies from this Tom Ford guy. I'm not sure I've seen any other movie of his, despite his name seeming so familiar to me.

Side note: Chula wanted me to watch Take Shelter, also with Shannon. It's on my shelf and I'll get to it soon enough.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 01-08-2018 02:10 PM

Tom Ford also made A Single Man which is arguably the best stream of consciousness film ever made apart from Tarkovsky's The Mirror.
