YouTube - Sansho the Bailiff (1953) - Part 1/12

^watch that too, it's nice and depressing. And the 90's version of Lolita is on youtube (unhidden) aswell, if anyone's curious

cardboard adolescent 01-18-2009 01:09 PM

speaking of depressing, have you seen Dancer in the Dark? it's possibly the greatest musical ever made, starring bjork.

Molecules 01-18-2009 01:16 PM

yes, that's in it's own league of depressing. I felt so sorry for her when she kept working in the factory even though she was going blind. Lovely Bjork =(

It's one of those films where things go from bad to worse and you watch out of morbid fascination. Lars Von Trier and Mike Leigh (with the exception of his latest) films are always sure bets for a downer. edit: i should add their films are more often than not depressingly profound rather than just an exercise in misery... did Bjork have a hand in the glitchy minimal music for that movie?

NikkiRuby 01-18-2009 01:23 PM

The last movie I saw was Choke.
It's based on Chuck Palahniuk's book with the same title. It's about a guy named Victor, who's a sex addict.
Perfect movie for people with dark humor ;)

I rented this expecting something totally different...as in something with a lot more blood and guts. But...I wasn't completely disappointed as the movie turned out to be pretty good. It doesn't 'blow the horror genre to bits' as the above picture claims...but it was suspenseful and I enjoyed the ending.

I was so dissappointed in this movie. I expected something on the level of "Hero"...what I got was a love story that wasn't even that touching (IMO) and same-ole-same-ole marital arts moves. It kept my attn until the end...but just barely.

All over the cover of this movie is plastered the word "comedy". Comedy, comedy, comedy. Seriously? I mean, yeah, it definitely had it's comedic moments. But I actually felt depressed after watching it. It was a decent movie, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone who wanted a laugh necessarily.

Predictable and boring. Barely finished it. 5/10

Molecules 01-18-2009 02:39 PM

^^ I've not seen Changeling yet (by all accounts it's brilliant) but I think Clint's overrated these days, the last truly satisfying film I saw by him was Unforgiven... ''the Duck of Death''

adidasss 01-18-2009 02:52 PM

I couldn't agree more, which is why I'm not holding my breath for The changeling.

I enjoyed it

Molecules 01-18-2009 04:29 PM

^^ good job. Despite starring Brendan fraser i didnt think the remake was all that bad

I watched that at the flicks when it came out and felt exactly the same way, however subsequent viewings on DVD changed my mind and it's on a par with Hero for sure. It's just not as immediate.

I have to say I found that movie kind of disappointing. I thought it would be a lot better. The soundtrack is great thought.

James Franco=sex.

agreeeeed. I've been watching an insane amount of old Freaks and Geeks episodes recently, the man is fox.

adidasss 01-18-2009 06:06 PM

The man is indeed the sex, but for some reason I couldn't even sit through one episode of Freaks and geeks. I'm tempted to give it another try.

What's Seth a stereotype of Lee?

jackhammer 01-18-2009 06:17 PM

A loveable stoner in every film he does. Most women would run away from him in real life. The only time he was likeable was in The 40 Year Old Virgin.

Molecules 01-18-2009 06:19 PM

those Seth Rogen/Judd Apatow films got old ages ago. They're like the new new frat pack i.e. not funny

pretty good joint

Piss Me Off 01-19-2009 09:20 AM

Need to see that.

Pineapple Express might just be in my top 20 films. Fuck knows why but it's easily my favourite stoner film.

adidasss 01-19-2009 09:43 AM

The big Lebowski's a better film but yeah, this one's up there. I need to see Araki's Smiley face.

anticipation 01-19-2009 01:05 PM

step brothers was so lame.

1:30 of pure nonsense.

fratZo 01-19-2009 02:41 PM

Very good film!

Didn't think this would be my cup of tea at all but absolutely loved it. Very funny.

Genuinely funny in places. A little too cutesy however. But still its got dancing penguins so what more do you need?

This was pretty slow, and probably could have been a half hour shorter. Aside from that it was an exceptional film. The contrast of Pitt's and Affleck's portrayals of their characters was amazing to watch.

boo boo 01-19-2009 10:40 PM

Boo to Rogen/Apatow bashers.

Pan's Labyrinth - ****

Amazing and haunting film. Brilliantly crafted by del Toro and one of the most terrifying movie villians ever in Captain Vidal. If only more fantasy films were this good.

Babel - ****

The theme can be lost on some, but I love this film, amazing cast all around, yet another great film from Alejandro González Iñárritu.

Crash - ***

Good, not great, I'm quite amazed that this won best picture, it's a well made film with good performances, but it's nothing new and not terribly deep either, not much in the way of character development, and a bit too preachy.

adidasss 01-20-2009 04:33 AM

It was the bulletproof cloak sequence that clenched it...

I didn't walk into this movie thinking it was going to be a cimematic masterpiece or anything...but come on. It was so obviously predictable, a blind-deaf man could have told you whodunit 15 min into the movie. The only redeeming grace was the 3D-ness of it, which made for some pretty nifty scenes with the pick-axe and the blood and what not.

jackhammer 01-20-2009 07:11 AM

I had a bad feeling about the film. All they seem to be promoting is the 3D aspect which tells me it sucks. I cant watch 3D as I'm partially sighted in my left eye, so I only use my right eye.

dac 01-20-2009 06:41 PM

Just saw 'Taken' and it was fantastic. Yes I know it isn't out in the states yet, but that doesn't stop my roomate from downloading a DVD quality version of it haha. Anyways, take the action and badassness from the Borne movies and mix it up with a little bit different of a story and you've got Taken. Highly recommended, best movie I've seen since Dark Knight.

boo boo 01-20-2009 06:51 PM

Taken looks awful, how many times has the kidnapped daughter/pissed off father thing been done? Lot's of times.

This coming from a Bleach fan is hilarious.
