I dunno, I just couldn't get past the retarded premise (Japan's economy is down so the adults decide to kill a random bunch of teenagers every year? Whu..why? Did I miss something?) They should have just made it so Kitano was a crazy sadistic billionaire who just liked to see a bunch of kids kill each other...

Anyway, if you're into gore then I guess I could see how this could appeal to you. I'm not.

The gore is OTT but then that is as much of a statement of Japans seemingly repressed society in that they have always been fascinated with gore and violence as a release of tension.

It's a well thought out film I think and even your man Tarantino loves it ;)
I hate linking to wikipedia but it's a good page:

Oh, that is what I meant to say.

Have you read the book?

I last saw Taking Woodstock. It was OK, I was hoping for more since I usually like Ang Lee films. There were some humorous parts but the movie overall seemed to have no direction.

It was one of those movies that you just feel in the middle of them "why the hell am I still sitting here". I was kind of disappointed, as I was expecting the film to delve more into the summer of love. At least Love's The Red Telephone was inserted in the best scene of the movie, that did cheer me up immensely. Which also allowed me to force Love on my friends for the next few months.
