I felt like whether he (this is your chance to stop reading because I'm not feeling like spoiler tags) lived or died would have felt like a cop out either way. The combination/fakeout approach subverted that.

Dark and depressing endings are a cliche of their own these days. I'm guessing you know that happy endings that tie things together are cliche too. The ending teases the latter and follows through with the former, and in doing so manages to not be a cliche.

Chula Vista 08-15-2017 03:56 PM

Which movie you talking about?

Spoiler for The Vanishing:
The ending of this is terrifying on two levels.
Not only is the guy going to suffocate but after 3 years he now knows his wife dealtt with the same unimaginable terror.

Frownland 08-15-2017 03:57 PM

I've seen and love The Vanishing more, but I was talking about Buried.

Mondo Bungle 08-15-2017 06:31 PM

Paprika is one of my new favorite movies. It's so so nice and gay and I love everything about it. I wish I could see it for the first time every time

MicShazam 08-16-2017 12:58 AM

Master & Commander.

It was allright. Some of the ship scenes were confusing and a couple of them made little sense to me, but it was fun none the less.

All Things Must Pass

Tels the story of the rise and fall of Tower Records. Fascinating how a company can be the top of its game and then vanish just like that. The way they treat their employees however is how you run a company. Russ Solomon is a legend. This also makes me wish I grew up in the 70s.

It's so imaginative and beautiful. I love just absorbing every it throws my way. Tokyo Godfathers is another anime by the same director that's very much worth watching, allthough it's far less weird.

Agreed on all of that, and it's funny because I saw Colin Hanks at Amoeba records a few months ago in Hollywood. Who knew he was into music so much.

Chula Vista 08-16-2017 01:52 PM

Time Lapse

Very cool premise with some nice twists and turns.

And as a bonus........

I've been meaning to watch this. I didn't even know my town had a Tower Records until a year or two before it went out of business, and even then it was too far to walk and public transport was super inconsistent.

I wonder if it's possible for a revival as a vinyl only store that's in partnership with Amazon or something, like what they do with books. It'd probably be Tower Records in name only, but it'd still be kind of cool to see Tower Records again.

Exo 08-16-2017 01:57 PM

Go to Japan. They're still huge in Japan.

Zer0 08-16-2017 02:24 PM

We still have Tower Records in Ireland under a licensed franchise.

Exactly. The ending twisted so many ways, with first the hallucination, then the real ending, then the real real ending, you kind of didn't know how it would turn out. I loved the ending, even though it was so heartbreaking. The video will was soul-crushing; I mean, who is ever going to find that? Also, shout out to that snake! Yeah! You in MY hood now, biatch! :thumb:

Superb documentary, and very sad how it all ended up. There'll never be another place like that.

These kind of films are very much the cinematic equivalent of lo-fi indie rock. I wasn't particularly a fan of this film, but it's certainly not bad as such. It feels like it's being more low budget and grainy than it needs to be. And while the lead character is likable, other supporting characters are a bit irritating. Instead watch Frances Ha for this done better.

Mondo Bungle 08-17-2017 09:49 PM

I watched Brazil and it's probably the funniest movie I've seen

djchameleon 08-17-2017 10:02 PM

^I thought the same when I watched it and had to go searching for a dvd copy of it.

I saw The Dark Tower a few hours ago and I couldn't help feeling like it left out information to condense a bigger story into 90 mins. I just felt a bit cheated and will now have to dive into the book series to get the satisfaction I want from it.

Chula Vista 08-17-2017 10:32 PM

Run All Night.

As far as this particular genre goes, great film. Some incredible camera pans that I have no clue how were pulled off.

We all know the famous scene in Heat where DeNiro and Pacino meet for the first time over cups of coffee. There's a restaurant scene between Harris and Neeson that's completely in the same league.

debaserr 08-17-2017 11:28 PM

Some parts of Brazil are really scary for me. At least on 1st/2nd view.

Totally agree. Everyone's seen the Directors version, right?

The other two versions don't do the film full justice - especially the 'Happy Ending' one.

Mondo Bungle 08-18-2017 09:19 PM

Really in love with this anime thriller stuff

Great movie! I haven't seen it in many years so maybe it's about time I dive back in. I remember it as being quite an experience.

Well, that's not the "Happy Ending" version for sure. How long was the version you saw? Gillian's original is 142 minutes. The studio cut 10 minutes out for the theatrical release. The happy ending version is less than 100 minutes and ends with the scene out in the country where Jill and Sam make love - right before they are captured.

Mondo Bungle 08-19-2017 03:15 PM

It was precisely 142 minutes.

He looked real happy though

Labotomy's get a bad rap. You know the scene where Sam is in the doctors office (the same doctor who gives him the labotomy) and at one point the doctor leaves Sam alone with his daughter. She says something but her accent is so thick she's hard to understand.

"Put it on big boy. I won't look at your willy."

I'm just making sure you've seen Evangelion.

MicShazam 08-19-2017 03:58 PM

Death of a Salesman. Very theatrical and sometimes a bit too frantically scripted. Surprisingly, the worst actor in the movie was Dustin Hoffman. He overacted like crazy. Otherwise it was allright and somewhat interesting. I didn't mind the intentionally fake looking painted skies, even if it looked really cheap.

I've got that one as well and it's been even more years. I don't remember anything about it, strangely.

It's a cute film with a good story, it's a bit silly in places yes but it's a fun film and Audrey Tautou was excellent in it.

I rate it 8.5/10
