Yeah, I was disappointed by that one too, and it kind of made me realize how annoying I find Lars von Trier. Great soundtrack though. As a standalone album it's probably my favorite thing Bjork has ever done.

I'm at home sick so I rewatched Being John Malkovich for the first time since I was 13 and my love for it is rejuvenated. Scenes like this are a reminder of what a pleasant mindfuck this film is. The ever evolving dynamics between Craig, Lotte and Maxine and their vessels really drive it.

Well I gave this a watch today and I was disappointed. There is no denying that is directed well and is powerful but I really do think that you need a shedload of background knowledge regarding the Neapolitan Mafia before you watch as it (quite rightly) seems to be made for an Italian audience knowing that you are au fait with the machinations of the crime so prevalent in this part of Italy. Certainly not the typical 'gangster' film that we are all used too. I really wish I was more knowledgeable about this part of Italy so I could appreciate the film more.

An early film from France's 'enfant terrible' director Gaspar Noe (Irrevesrible) is a truly nihilistic, savage piece of work that is abhorrent as it is engrossing. Certainly not an easy watch but a great piece of film that stays with you. I watched it a few years ago and decided to revisit tonight and I still was impressed despite it's completely un PC script.

It's cut over here but I have the uncut U.S release which is a little harder to track down and is matted unfortunately but still an engrossing watch.

I love this film as well, definitely what I would call a 'mindfuck!' I first watched it in about year 11 as we had to study it for Media, and at that point in time I was like what the hell is this?! But now it's definitely a favourite.

wow.

what the hell do i say about this movie?


i definately enjoyed the surreality of it, especially in the daydream sequences. one of my favorite scenes was when Sam donned in his angel knight wear fought against the giant samurai, really a part that had me at the edge of my seat. visually fantasitc and how alot of the recurring themes were represented i loved.

something else i really liked was the use of music, and not just of the use of "Aquarela do Brasil"; alot of the other music was really strong and went with the tone of the movie greatly.

at first i had to question Sam Lowry's high strungedness and motives as some sort of mental issue, as some of the things he did "out of love" were very erratic and almost life threatening. it was like when he finally got a hold of Jill that something in him snapped and he just went off the deep end. i also had to question some of Jill's motivation to follow/stay with him in that with Sam's erratic behavior would've driven most other women away in fear.

in all i gotta say that this movie's....odd. definately something that keeps your attention, something beautifully done and greatly inspired, though many parts were just strange, not so much in a good or bad way but in an intriguing way that makes you want to analyze it all further.

favorite line: "Don't fight it son, confess...quickly! If you hold out too long you could jeapordize your credit ratng!"

About forty minutes of Sherlock Holmes, then we walked out of the theater, which I can't honestly remember ever doing. It's not that I had high expectations from a Guy Ritchie film, but I at least expected to be entertained. It takes a particular talent to completely stifle the usually undeniable screen charisma of Jude Law and Downey jr., whose relationship, unlike what I had assumed it would be from the trailer - of a deep and long term friendship, seems more like a casual acquaintance. They have absolutely no chemistry together. And there's a painfully obvious lack of any humor in the film, which is pretty much the only thing that could have made this Snatch (or Lock, stock) 23 tolerable. Also, Downey's English accent is possibly the worst I've ever seen. I honestly would have preferred it had he spoken with his natural American accent, it would have been far less cringe-inducing, authenticity be damned.

In short, a shit film from a shit director who simply refuses to roll over and die already. Serves me right for spending time and money on this.
