Will do.

Watched a really cool flick last night. Rather than try to explain it I'll post the trailer.

Mondo Bungle 07-27-2017 06:27 PM

I've watched Bronson so many times with my friends I don't even like it anymore

Frownland 07-27-2017 06:37 PM

You just don't GET Bronson. It's very deep you see.

Mondo Bungle 07-27-2017 06:44 PM

yeah you're right I just lied, I've never even seen it or heard of it or known what a movie is

Drive pretends to be deeper than Bronson. You just don't GET it.

Mondo Bungle 07-27-2017 07:52 PM

You pretend my dick is deep in your ass but you just don't get it

This post has not been my finest hour

debaserr 07-27-2017 09:44 PM

How is Drive deep / pretends to be?

It's a very simple movie.

The action scenes are incredible.

The thing with Drive is it's all atmosphere - not depth. LOVE that movie and the way is mixes soft and loud, sweet and evil, good people and bad people.

And ya, the action scenes are amazing. The opening scene alone is brilliant.

Also love the nod to Irreversable with the elevator scene.

MicShazam 07-28-2017 12:52 AM

I have a strong dislike for anything made by Refn and that includes Drive. He somehow manages to make empty schlock movies that come off as being unbearably pretentious and are tedious to get through as well. I almost never feel like a movie is pretentious, but Refn just has a style that annoys me to the maximum extent. Valhalla Rising must have been one of my most unbearable movie viewing experiences ever.

Not a fan.

Plus everyone in Drive acted in that emotionally deadened, muted way which totally kills any sense of believeability in the characters. That scene where Carey Mulligan witnesses a horrific act in the elevator, and then just walks out like it wasn't anything... I wanna say that's one of the worst acted scenes in film history, but I know that would be an exaggeration. But it was bad, and it was illustrative of a huge problem I have with this useless specimen of a director.

Probably the most overrated movie of the last 20 years.

She didn't just "walk out like it wasn't anything". That scene (as brutal as it was) was essential. The kiss they shared once the driver knew what was about to happen, and the way the director changed the lighting and speed was brilliant. She didn't know she'd fallen in love with a complete psychopath. A psychopath who would do anything to protect her and her boy (and even her son's dad earlier in the film).

The key to that scene is after Mulligan exits the elavator in shock, the Driver turns with blood and murder lust starting to drain away, and he realizes he's lost her (and her son) forever. The look on his face says it all.

FF to 2:30

On a side note, I just made the connection between Drive and Ex-Machina tonight. I'm getting so freaking slow.

MicShazam 07-28-2017 06:31 AM

I get Gosling's acting in this scene, but her's is less "OMG that is horrible what kind of monster is he?!" and more "hmm... what kind of milk should I get. Did I have half a carton left? I can't remember".

I think it's a brilliant movie, but I'm going to have to agree.

The only thing I remember about Drive is that I don't really remember anything about it.

Nope.

Negatives first:
The non-linear storyline is confusing.
There's next to no historical background, meaning you'll be confused if you don't already know the story of the evacuation.
Kenneth Branagh has seen better days.

That said, this is a movie that needs to be seen in theatre. You know the old cliché about non-stop action? It's true to the letter for Dunkirk. There is no time to breathe. You are there—on the beaches, on the landing grounds and in the streets, on sea, land and air.

The Batlord 07-29-2017 04:02 PM

Loved Dunkirk. I was excited and engrossed from the first minute till the last. And if I was confused by anything it was because of the nature of the dialogue, the number of characters who popped in and out of the movie at random, and the fact that just about everyone in the movie had the same brown hair so I often had no idea who was who. But that was a pretty great aspect of the movie afaic since it really made each soldier feel like one in a sea of faceless cogs where it didn't matter which one was which.

Trying to figure out when the plane and boat scenes were going on was kinda sketchy though, but it never bothered me.

Neon Demon is hot garbage with a shiny bow.

I liked Drive a lot but I hated Valhalla Rising so I can relate to your feelings about Refn.

Chiomara 07-29-2017 05:52 PM

I liked Drive and loved Bronson, but I haven't felt compelled to watch the others yet. I've heard that Valhalla Rising was highly disappointing and devoid of any real depth.

This is probably a correct statement, but for the same reason that Only God Forgives is a cult masterpiece.

Mondo Bungle 07-31-2017 06:52 PM

Tokyo Gore Police was the best movie

Chula Vista 07-31-2017 07:53 PM

Minority Report. Such a mind blowing movie on every level. Considering it's now 15 years old the SFX still 100% hold up completely.

debaserr 08-01-2017 12:43 AM

^ Love that movie.

Every five years or so it's a real treat.

I wish there was more good sci-fi out there, that predicts stuff on earth rather than utilize spaceships / tropes / etc.

Philip K. Dick story, that's why. A ton of great sf movies are based on his stories and novels. Not all of them were faithful adaptations (I'm looking at you, Total Recall, both the original and the remake) but all of them are at least interesting.

Just finished watching Midnight Express. I don't know how famous it is and how many in here have seen it. Basically: A young American man travels to Turkey in the 70's. Get's caught in the airport with several kilos of hash. Spends many years in prison hell hole.

Sort of cheesy soundtrack and the acting gets a bit melodramatic, but overall a very good movie. There's a few things that aren't exactly believeable about it, so definitely "based on true events" rather than an accurate representation of what really happened.

The Batlord 08-01-2017 11:43 AM

I remember liking that movie in high school, but I don't remember much about it other than the concept and the dude being hung upside down and a Turkish guard beating on the soles of his feet with a club or something.

That scene is pretty much the first thing that happens after he's been locked up. There's a lot of other nasty scenes in the movie, plus a few scenes that were downright strange. Not least the scene where the protagonist goes nuts and bites a guy's tongue off.

The Batlord 08-01-2017 12:04 PM

lulz
