Closer to it than usual for Fincher was my point. It was only a half point deduction so it doesn't exactly affect my love of the film.

debaserr 06-04-2017 12:40 PM

fight club / the social network are awesome as well

Alien: Covenant

i saw this at the pre opening on Thursday with another huge fan of the series and someone who had not even seen Prometheus

i'm a little late on this but have been waiting for someone to talk with about it....thanks DJ :)

so here were my emotions

Before film
Beyond excited

After film
good movie but very underwhelmed (hated the cgi)

after talk with person who had not seen Prometheus (she was completely lost)
Very good film still a little let down (still hated the cgi)

after sleeping on it
i went into this all wrong....it's actually an incredible film and i;m still a little let down due to what the preview portrayed (i still hated the cgi)

i need to see it again going in thinking this is a direct sequel to Prometheus and only the beginning of connecting it to Alien

there is a cgi scene that makes me think Ridley Scott may be suffering for early onset Alzheimer disease and forgot he was an amazing director the day he allowed that shit into his film

djchameleon 06-05-2017 08:33 PM

I happened to do the same thing. I went with my gf and she didn't see Prometheus. So I was explaining a few things along the way then I just told her to wait til after the movie for a proper explanation from me.

Spoiler for deets:
So, did you find it ironic that the creators that made the spore virus to kill all human life so they can start from scratch end up dying from the same virus. I was wondering if I remembered Prometheus wrong. Maybe I do need to re-watch it.

bob. 06-06-2017 07:16 AM

Spoiler for your face:
Shay says at the end of Prometheus that they are going to the creators home world....it's Davis that takes the step to commit genocide....the villain has definitely been turn from the Xenomorph to David....i'm really looking forward to the next film

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 06-06-2017 09:22 AM

what was the cgi moment? im trying to remember but i cant think of a specfic "omg this is bad animation" moment

Chula Vista 06-06-2017 11:55 AM

Finally got around to watching Spotlight. Man, what a powerful flick. And such great acting by all of the main characters.

Spoiler for Spoiler:
The part where she interviews the ex-priest on his porch and he comes right out and admits to abusing boys, but that it was ok because he didn't derive pleasure from it.......

The last scene with the Spotlight phones ringing non-stop with more victims coming forward after the story broke was the perfect ending.

Frownland 06-06-2017 12:25 PM

Weird, I thought I had seen you mention it before. One of my favourite dialogue driven movies if I'm being honest.

So ever since imdb took out their message boards, I've had a void in my life since I used to always take a look at them to get a good idea of common thoughts on the movie. Does anyone know of any alternatives that have popped up in its place?

Chula Vista 06-06-2017 12:28 PM

Ya, I guess I did see it once before. Some movies make a much bigger second impression on me than the first.

Oh, and Rotten Tomatoes.

Spoiler for Idk mang:
I remember her saying that and was hoping for something insightful to come out of that but David just decides to kill them off without What's permission. I just don't get why the creators would make a virus that was also harmful to them. You would think they would be immune to it but I guess the writers needed to move the plot along.

Very in love with this director. He can do no wrong and the next Blade Runner looks incredible. I don't know what the fuck this films about, or any of the unanswered questions the film poses, but the same can be said for 2001: A Space Odyssey. So who gives a fuck. It's pretty much an acid trip that almost seems feasible until a certain point. Gyllenhaal was fantastic. Highly recommended.

It is indeed good as **** and Patrick Stewart's best performance in those films easily. And that last fight scene with Logan was definitely the best scene of Wolverine on film.

Denis Villeneuve is my favorite director right now. Both Sicario and Arrival are masterpieces. Will definitely check Enemy out.

Prisoners turned me onto him. This guys potentially Kubrick-worthy of a legacy.

You excited for the new Blade Runner?

Definitely. You ever read the book "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?"

It was the inspiration for the first Blade Runner movie, but they deviated quite a bit from the novel to 'Hollywood-ize" the story.

I'm hoping Denis brings some of the missing elements back in.

I think he's a mash up director and an evolution to the art. There will never be another Kubrick, Spielberg, Scorcese, etc. But the new breed are fusing all the best of all of them into a whole new direction.

I'd add Fernando Meirelles to the mix.

Haven't read it yet. I just watched Blade Runner for the first time about 3 days ago. Still fresh in my mind. Unbelievable fucking film. I'll add Chris Nolan.

Definitely!!! Him and his brother have been doing amazing things for years now.

Do me a favor and read the book (its pretty short) before seeing the new movie.

Did you know that it holds a special place in cinema history that only two other films have achieved?

Won the academy award for best actor, best actress, best film, best director, and best screenplay.

Silence of the Lambs and It Happened One Night are the other two.

Just realized that three of my favorite recent movies all have something in common. Looper, The Edge of Tomorrow, and Sicario.

Latest I saw was Angel's Egg. I went into it with lowered expectations due to reviews and wound up getting blown away. Stunningly beautiful visuals and atmosphere. At several points I was completely immersed in a meditative state within the film. I've been putting it on now when I go to sleep, which is something I never thought of doing with any film before. It reminds me of dreaming. I never got the feeling that the story was sparse or lacking, it just gave the interactions and exchanges more weight if anything. I'm still not completely sure how to interpret the whole thing and I don't think I'll ever come to any conclusions, but that's just another plus for me. Glad I put off watching it for so long so I could soak it in at a time when I'd appreciate this kind of film more, but now I'm sad. I need more like this.

Definitely Aronofsky's worst movie but at least he was trying to do something a little different. It's always weird when Hollywood decides to enlist oddball indie-type directors to make blockbusters. Just like David Lynch with Dune.

I didn't mind it, I actually thought it was pretty good and Aronofsky seems like a brilliant director to tackle a story like that. No where near The Wrestler or Black Swan but decent nonetheless.
