The Witch was easily my second favorite film of 2015....only Ex Machina was better in my opinion...that being said

Spoiler for spoiler:
i hated the ending and felt it pulled away from the general feel of the film and was seriously shlocky, unnecessary, and incredibly stupid

Personally her walking into the woods naked and ending there would have created a better affect on the viewer

i also never felt the family's situation created the outcome nor do i feel she went out of "survival mode"....she is flat out told that she could easily return to the village and live her life in servitude as a woman or she could walk into the woods and be free

again i love this film and have re-watched it several times....i just felt the very ending pulled away from the genuine feel this film created

I agree that the ending could have been toned down. That being said, it didn't feel like it was presented to her as a choice but more that she was being manipulated into one outcome. Just like how leaves the community, in a sense liberated, but despite this Thomasin still felt the hand of oppression. It was like it was set up as a false, paradoxical dichotomy: go to the village and be a servant, or serve me and be free.

Well now I'm going to watch the movie again to nail down my interpretation, because I just confused myself.

The Neon Demon (2016) - IMDb

a fancy guy I know suggested this and it's a goody. It looked all sparkly and whack looking around but it went hard when I watched it.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 05-10-2017 07:04 PM

all NWR films will rock your socks off. not in the same way because they're not all horrors, but visually they're brilliant and they have killer soundtracks as well.

Whatever this fucking means lol. The Neon Demon isn't that great honestly. Only God Forgives though, that's another discussion.

Frownland 05-10-2017 10:27 PM

It's pretentious as ****, I love it. Finally something I can relate to.

It really is a great film though.

Agreed. I enjoy films where I don't have to hear Gosling talk too much anyways so that's just a plus.

Frownland 05-10-2017 10:59 PM

I meant Neon Demon.

What really made it poignant for me is that, like her father thinking that they can manage on their own without the help of the rest of the village, she thought she could fight it on her own for the whole film. Only after she loses everything does she succumb to the reality of what she must do to survive. Her situation only ever set her up for one outcome.

We're agreeing way too much lately.

I don't know if it's in theaters or out but I think enough time has passed that it should be, is The movie "Get Out" really racist towards white people like everyone's claiming or just a good movie?

Give it a view and decide for yourself. It will surprise you.

I saw Guardians of the Galaxy over the past weekend. The opening scene was funny as hell but I wasn't in the mood to have feels popping up through out the movie. It was still good but meh I didn't care for the family drama. There was even a line said that made me feel like I was watching a Fast and the Furious movie haha.

This is a movie where the enjoyment of it comes from knowing as little as possible. So stop reading what people are saying and just go watch the movie and find out for yourself.

This really applies to every film in my opinion.

I don't really want to see the movie. Not my thing. I'm just curious.

Spoiler for Well in that case:
The movie isn't racist towards white people but it does feature some racist white people.

I'm hitting up some Lost Highway this second

I went into Get Out with the bias of expecting it to be a ham-fisted SJW horror-comedy, so I was looking for it the entire way through, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that my assumptions were wrong. It's just a straight up good movie with a satisfying amount of curve-balls.

Also, not sure who recommended After Hours (Scorsese) to me a week or two ago, Exo probably, but I got around to it and really enjoyed it, thanks.

Glad you did. Nobody ever talks about that movie and they really should.

Chula Vista 05-16-2017 03:31 PM

Re-watching The Paper Chase (1973) for the first time in decades. No guns, no car chases, no explosions, no aliens, no villains, no mystery, just human interaction based on a intriguing premise.

Timothy Bottoms (Johnny Got His Gun, Last Picture Show), an absolutely beautiful Lindsay Wagner, and the Academy Award winning John Houseman.

Such a touching story. Wish more movies like this were made these days. If you didn't like Manchester by the Sea you'll hate this movie.

Ebert gave it 4 stars and it has an 85% approval rating on RT. Not that counts on MB.

Mondo Bungle 05-16-2017 05:02 PM

jesus **** the acting in Scanners is cancerous

rostasi 05-16-2017 06:51 PM

Saw Guardians... 2 today. Gonna have to see it at least two more times 'cause I spent so much time laughing and missed out on more funny shit.

Chiomara 05-16-2017 06:57 PM

Carol (2015) -- I loved it. I always love understated dramas about forbidden lesbian affairs. Cate Blanchett is magical.

(I also watched The Duke of Burgundy and The Witch recently but I'm not quite sure yet how I feel about them. I did really like The Witch overall, though.)

If anybody here hasn't seen Changeling yet, i'm just going to say that I have seen it several times, and it hasn't gotten old. It's on Netflix. Watch it. Right now. What are you doing reading this? GO!

Mondo Bungle 05-16-2017 07:02 PM

it's decent if not basic haunted house stuff

Dated but still absolutely amazing.

https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/conversation

This movie prefaces so much of what it going on in modern times, along with containing one of the greatest WTF twist endings ever.

Capolla directs an amazing cast perfectly.

(note: many think that Enemy of The State was a sequel to this movie). I completely agree.

The scene that may or may not involve Pac-man nearly had me in tears and still cracks me up. I thought it was great. I'd say on par with the first one, although the first one is a better made film. Just go see it if you haven't, it's great.

Inland Empire by Lynch, god that movie is a mind****, love it to bits though

Great, great movie. It's a shame that the slow burn can be considered dated, since it was used so well in the 70s.

I wish more movies were made like this today.

Pretty amazing to think that Francis Ford Coppola lost the Oscar for this movie to himself.

Trollheart 05-20-2017 01:27 PM

Watched Brewster's Millions for the first time in decades last week. Terrible ending. What happened to John Candy at the end??

I think that style has carried on in the form of television, since more shows are taking that approach now and are getting made with high film quality in mind (instead of something you just throw on after dinner).
